I immediately liked the drums. THen that sound, kinda like a heartbeat, is way cool.

nice, tight, background beat.

I found myself wanting it to soar with a nice bellowing female voice though.

The one heartbeatish sound that comes in the beginning, and then a bit later, is just a clip and tweak of the main underlying bass throb sampled from an analog synth. The second slower heartbeat type sound that comes at about 4:23 is a tweaked snippet of a percussive string bass line from Soul Coughing. The song is basically 100% derivative samples other than my daughter's voice.

Vocals? Yeah, maybe. But I think they would have to be very wet and ethereal, like Kate Bush or Elizabeth Fraser. I'll give it a try.

Thanks,

that deep trance sound, Liked it bro, those drums are pretty tight

samich17,

I especially like the intro to 'odd man out'. Slightly "musica concrete" which sits well with my modernist sensibilities.

Doubt it will go over well with your average Hip Hop fan, but some of the lyrics in 'birthday bash' gave my chills up my back. Thanks.:)

Splitting hairs (or is it hares? ;)) maybe, but I wouldn't call 'worksong' "straight dance". Straight dance is all 4 by 4 kicks on the floor. I'm drawn by breakbeats and slithery bass lines which I hope have more of a shuffle and groove, if you know that I mean.

Oh, and how about the mix? I think I got a good heavy bass pulse, but was worried that it might sound too muddy on other systems since there's a lot of deep stuff going on. No?

thanks for listening and responding...

it isn't splitting hairs. what you are talking about, i call techno...worksong wasn't techno, but it did sound like club/dance music...the beats were phat...it's repetition didn't wear on my brain, which techno can't help but do...it sounded extra warm on my system (Cerwin Vega Home Speakers)..bumped the cone out a little bit...as you could probably tell, if you had listened to my cuts on a decent home stereo, i like to bounce my cones around a good deal..some may say that your track felt in the distant...or lower-grade eq-ing job, but i like it...we need to be real...i want to learn to become a great mixing engineer, but i will never lose my amateur perspective..:) thanks again...i'd like to hear more...
take care

you'd be surprised...after really getting deep into hi-hop, i searched and searched the web around and back again for the best underground freestylists and there are many...you are probably right, however, that it wouldn't go over well with main stream hip hop, but i am willing to bet that there are emcees out there that'd give me props...maybe not..i like it

As far as the mix, very close to dead on where I would leave it.

The 'clap' w/ the snare you hear at the beginning is a bit too loud and up front however, I might bring it down a notch and eq it low.

The background 'car scene' sound hitting around 0:33 could be smoothed out a bit, and at 1:13 turned up a tiny bit in volume.

The overall is a bit muddy, so you might attempt to eq the synth sounds a bit higher to add a tiny bit of crispness.

Background whispers could be a tiny bit more crisp as well.

Your daughters voice sample fits the mood perfectly, but I'd see if I could smooth it out a bit, it seems a bit rough on the edges of the wave-form so to speak, compared to the rest of the digitally smooth landscape... Maybe just pass it through a filter a couple times.

Overall, very ambient tune, I like, almost theatrical or movie based background tune. Very atmospheric and emotional.

Added onto my favorites list ;)

I like it.. good feel about it. Maybe some variation or a break or something.. maybe not.. it's really good as it is.

Thomas,

I listened to the first version...

I actually liked the ambience... instruments and sounds are panned nicely, but it also sounded fine in mono format. I didn't get any phase cancellation that I could see, and it sounded excellent through my 4412's and pretty good on a $500 aiwa bookshelf system. Sounded like crap on my laptop, but we'll blame the .75" speakers :)

The snare is bright and clean, though the bass drum I'd give a little more snap on the attack. Thats just me, and its a matter of preference.

Also, I'd considering varying the drum part slightly - while it is techno, and generally accepted to be rock-stable, often a little play in the high-hat timing creates an additional feel if its subtle, yet still gives the rock-stable presence.

Nice and clean, I like it.

frederic,

Yeah, this is one that definitely does not work on a laptop. The true meat of the song is that deep throbbing bass.:)

I considered a snappier kick, but I'm specifically going for a mellower downtempo feel. The basic themes are already kind of dark and brooding, so I want to highlight the smoky ambience rather than the scary edge. My wife complains that my stuff (painting also) is too dark as it is. ;)

I'm also working on some drum variations and subtle breaks.

Thanks! :D

Cool.

barefoot :

Not my style but cool. Your right about the bass. Sounds good.

I wanted to ask you. How trouble free is your server "nowhere Radio"? As in easy quick sign up, do the files post quickly? Do they own your soul after sign up?

Thanks for any info.

Oh, no kidding :) I run into it all the time. I usually bring my headphones with me for listening to live365.com in between meetings (though I should listen DURING meetings), I didn't have them with me this week. Packing light :)

Well, you achieved that. Know that I liked it, and was offering styling suggestions more than technical suggestions, because I happen to like that style of music. Normally I just make recommendations regarding technique and method more than style.

I'm also working on some drum variations and subtle breaks.

Coool :P) Just stay far away from the verse, chorus, verse, chorus stuff :) I liked the piece a lot.
