Hi
I'm not a MAC fan, so I just need an idea if there's someone using a recording system besides the MAC/Protools/Digidesign squad. I mean it should be matched using PC, not MAC, not Protools, nor Digidesign HD Accel, nor Digidesign Control Surfaces. Anything that will beat that most used system in a professional studio. It would be nice if there are some packages like Cakewalk Sonar and MOTU, or Cubase and Apogee. And what the hell is that Digidesign up to? Why in the hell are they using an audio interface and a core card (HD Accels) at the same time, plus even another AD/DA converters, where you can just use a single MOTU hardware all in one?

There are many of us that don't think that Pro Tools is "all that" anyway. Cakewalk makes some good stuff. Reaper is good and inexpensive. If you use Digi stuff then you're stuck with their proprietary hardware. The only reason I would even consider Pro Tools is to have compatibility with other studios that use it.

If you post your requirements, number of simultaneous inputs, etc, I'm sure others will be along to make some suggestions.

Let say no limit on the budget. If I can buy anything up to the high end alternatively besides the Digi system. What would be a great chain of core hardwares, audio interface and AD/DA converters?

Pro Tools is not mac only.

I would look into Presonus's Studio One. Looks VERY promising...

One of the PCI-express RME soundcards that have the several banks of ADAT inputs...
+ Apogee, RME or Lynx converters
+ Whatever preamps you want
+ Whatever DAW you want... Cubase? Sonar?

Probably works out a lot cheaper than a similar PT HD system, yet it would be just as capable if it was running on a decent computer. Add some UAD-2 cards for good measure :)

In the grand scheme, software means almost nothing. It's the hardware leading up to it and the monitoring chain and room behind it that make the difference.

The 1's and 0's captured by ProTools are the same 1's and 0's that would be captured by Reaper or anything else.
