This is a short instrumental I wrote in rememberance of a good mate of mine who took his own life in a very brutal manner!

It is the first time I have actually recorded my nylon string guitar. I only used one mic which was a Shure SM57 directed between the soundhole and the 12th fret. Since recording this I have read about various mic techniques I can employ next time!

I would appreciate any comments on improving the sound captured here in regards to the nylon string guitar!

The tune is called Missing You

Thanx in advance!

Hey gorty, nice tune - sorry about your friend...
The biggest suggestion I could make production-wise is to replace the synth sound that comes in about half way with something else... the line itself is fine, but the sound is too synthy and kind of breaks the organic feel. I'm not sure what kind of sounds you have access to, but maybe something like a melotron strings sample? That would give it a cool and sad vibe...
Sorry, I know you asked about the guitar, but I think it sounds fine for the context - hope this helps :)

Hey Dr Biscuits,

Thanx for the comments and your time taken to listen. I take any suggestions onboard. Most of the times when I worked on this tune it became hard to concentrate, I have quite a few sounds accessible to use so I will have a look over as you suggested and see what I can come up with.

Thanx again Dr Biscuits, I appreciate your response!

Nice guitar sound Gorty. It's good and clean. Nice playing also. I think the piano would be good to use, instead of teh synth. The synth sounds good, but I agree with Dr.B, that is a bit out of contest with the guitar, sound wise. It's not horribly distracting or anything like that, but something like the piano sound goung along with the guitar, would just sound more natural.

Sorry about your loss, but the tune is very pretty.

Cheers Dogman!

I had another listen and I agree with you and Dr.B.
I will definitely retrack another instrument in there!
Thanx also for the thumbs up on the guitar sound, I found it hard to make a call on the guitar myself here with this tune!

Thanx again Dogman, I miss my mate dearly!! :( :(

Hey Gorty,
This is a great piece of music.....

You continue to impress with your guitar skills; you can rock out (like One of These Days/Hyperactive Wah Wah) or play this cool mellow stuff too! I'm off on vacation nest week so I'm downloading this to listen to while I'm flying. :D

I thought that the recording using the SM57 was nice and clean. A condensor might give it a bit more fullness, but I was suitably impressed with the sound you got from the SM57. Pretty good sound for a dynamic..... :)

The synths are ok, but you might try to push them further into the background (reverb?), or pan or eq them away from the guitar. I found they were sonically too similar and were fighting the guitar at times. Or, you can just retrack using something else..... :D

Sorry about your friend. This song is a fitting tribute and the classical style suits the mood very well....

Nice tune, and quite full of emotion.

I actually think the sound of the guitar fits well. I agree that a different sound for the synth would be good. I think strings would sound good personally, even though as is is not bad at all.

Nice work, and my condolences for the loss of your friend.

Hey ido1957,

Thanx for listening and the compliments, I really do appreciate it! I think my microphone arsenal needs to be upgraded as I have no condensers at this stage!

I hope you have a great holiday ido1957, and thank you for your condolences!

Thanx again!

Gorty :)

Hey metalhead,

Thanx to you as well for taking the time to listen!
I appreciate your comments and will retrack the synth to see what I come up with.

I thank you for your condolences! I miss my mate! :(

Gorty the strings might be nylon but the sound is golden.
On the other hand the synths strings sound plastic still. I like the arrangement just not the sound. The little synth swirl/throb near the beginning is interesting but should start earlier & finish later so it's ready to fill the space.
What happened at 2.37? It all stops & not in cadence.
Now I've heard you clean guitar sound I'm eager to hear your electric sound cleaner - you have great chops that don't need covering up.
Cheers

Gortz, sorry about your friend.

I like the tune alot and also agree about the synth. If you want to use a string type sound, try to find one with a quicker attack, or edit the patch if possible. Maybe a more electronic sound would work better. I don't know, really, but you've done some nice work here. Excellent fingerwork, as usual.

Thanx rayc for your comments and the time you took to listen as well!

I definitely will work on the synths, at 2:37 I faded but need to re-look at my timing there, thanx for bringing that to my attention!

Thanx for the compliments as well rayc, I appreciate it so much!

Gorty...you touched my heart with this, and I couldn't help but cry, it evoked a feeling of bittersweetness... knowing that it was written for someone you miss so much, yet it is a celebration of the opportunity you were given to share in the friendship the two of you had.

I am so very, very sorry about the loss of your mate. :(

I am glad however that you are expressing your grief in the music you have dedicated to him... :)

Your emotion comes through in every note you play, a bit of a haunting melody.

The only suggestions I would have, is perhaps to try the Cellos on the synth...they have a deep felt quality for expressing emotion.....and to make the song a bit longer....Gorty, if this is the emotion you experience when you play, then keep it if you feel good about it..... just as is.

Love you,
True :)

Hey True Thanx!

I really appreciate your kind words of comfort and your condolences! We all go through some rough times in our lives and I am so glad that all of us in this forum have our music to express our joys and sorrows!

I will retrack the synths and will have a listen how the Cellos sound.
Thanx again True, I do appreciate your feedback in more ways than words can express.

Thanx True
Gorty xx :)
