What does S/PDIF stand for?

It seems, from my search, that this is an advantageous option included on more of the higher end sound cards for recording.
 
Sony/Phillips Digital Interface Format. It's the "pro-sumer" digital transfer medium but that's not entirely true any more. It was refered to that because it carried SCUMS code and AES/EBU did not, but now most semi pro gear ignores copy management code. It's piped through high quality 75 ohm video cable usually with RCA type terminations but TOSLINK optical is S/PDIF as well.

That is one of the hardest parts about learning something new...lingo and acronyms, it is like being back in the Air Force!
