How important is having S/PDIF on the soundcard. Would it be worth the extra hundred or so.

If you have any outboard gear with S/PDIF inputs/outputs like a DAT or some mic pre's like the DBX 386, it becomes real important. Personally, I have to have it.

Even if you don't - if you might rent a DAT recorder (like I'm doing this thursday) or you have people bringing gear into your studio it is worth it.

It gives you that nice flexibility...

If I had to guess, you're debating between the Delta 44 and the 66... I went with the 66 since I figured that sooner or later I'd want the S/PDIF (how the hell do people pronounce that anyways?) and sure enough, it is barely a month later and I'm glad I have it. Sure, I got transfer via analog, but why??? Stuff went through an A/D to get into the DAT, why run it through a D/A then another A/D to get it out?

That's two more potential spots for the sound to potentially get crappier.

The Delta 44 vs. 66 challenge didnt last too long. Im going to go with the 66. I figure I will have it for a while and eventually come across a DAT or something. Often i meet people that seem to dig em. Maybe when i get situated, ill check one out. One more thing though.. how exactly do you (OldGrover) have the DAT set up to the delta? why does it have to transfer by analog? cant it stay digital because id like to avoid too many of these conversions.

You pronounce it "spiddif."

(The place where I work has a utility with the acronyn SCODIFMC, and they all pronounce it "scodifunk" and various obvious alterations of that...)

Levey - sorry, maybe I wasn't clear. I was saying with the Delta44 you'd need to go analog, ie, out the analog outs of the DAT, then in the analog ins of the 44...

With the 66 you can just run a RCA cable between them and stay digital. The 66 will sync up to the DAT so you get bit for bit perfect copies.
