I'm sure that this has probably been asked before, but since I haven't found any responses (perhaps I didn't look enough)...

I'm currently upgrading my recording PC to accomodate more tracks for live recording situations. The focus right now is to have 12 tracks of digital at 96kHz/24 bit open for recording...right now I have an Echo Gina and will be adding a Layla soon as well. What do I need in order to record analog sources through the s/pdif input on the Gina so that I can open up those last two tracks at that sample rate? My main concern here is a balance of quality and cost (i.e. there's no point in me spending as much on opening up two s/pdif tracks as I would on, say, another Layla), so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You'd need two more A/D converters with S/PDIF output. And if you want to use microphones on those inputs, mic preamps too.

I don't understand...if I'm only using the s/pdif input on the Gina, then why would I need more than one a/d converter with s/pdif output? (BTW, I meant the two channels of s/pdif signal when I referred to "opening up two channels of s/pdif", not to two separate s/pdif connections)

you only need one....

TR may have been confused because you said "2 S/PDIF tracks" and i think S/PDIF is always stereo......

so one stereo converter will do you.....

I guess I don't understand your original question. You have a Gina (so do I). It has two analog ins and outs and S/PDIF ins and outs. You want to add a Layla, 8 more analog ins and outs plus ADAT or S/PDIF. You said you need 12 simultainious record inputs. I assumed you wanted to use the 10 total analog inputs and utilize the S/PDIF input as well. If this is what you ment then I stand by my first response.

# of tracks from each source -

Layla's analog inputs - 8
Gina's analog inputs - 2
Ginas digital inputs - 2

total 12

if you used the s/pdif of both you could get 14 tracks

get on the stick, TR.....

Pffffffffffffftt...............................wanna hit of this?

Sorry, I didn't mean to cause confusion with the way that I wrote my question....so, it is possible to record from both the Gina and Layla s/pdif inputs at the same time? That's not a bad idea, thanks...but in regards to my original question...thanks for the link to the ART DI/O (the price is fairly nice as well)....are there any others that I should consider as well?

DBX 386 dual mic pre with analog and S/PDIF (coaxial) and AES/EBU outputs.
Envoice Mindprint with the digital output option, again coaxial. The Mindprint is a mono device though.
