...so to speak.

I'm getting the Delta 1010LT. In what way and what would I need to make use of the S/PDIF input with keyboards, soundboards, etc.?

A S/PDIF cable. Hosa is fine and relatively cheap. Don't just use any old RCA cable... Not the same.

For one, I've read that RCA cables are in fact the same, but it's not at all wise to use long distances.

But would some cable really provide conversion? S/PDIF is a digital format, not analog. How would I plug, say, my keyboard, which has 1/4 outputs, into S/PDIF in?

You have to run the output of your keyboard through an A/D convertor first

Sorry, I read too fast - I was under the impression that you had a keyboard or something else WITH a S/PDIF output. It's becoming common to see built-in conversion lately on so many units...

But the cable is different - The impedence is different (S/PDIF being 75ohms at termination if I'm not mistaken), the sheilding is more robust, etc.

In a cheap & quick fix, a regular RCA can be used, as it will pass the signal. However, the signal will suffer from degradation, whether you can hear it or not.

For the $8 or whatever a 2m S/PDIF cable costs, there's no reason not to use it.
