It's a digital in/out. It will come in two flavors. Coaxial uses 75 ohm video type cable that uses RCA type connections. The other is optical also refered to as TOSLINK and uses a (sort of) fiber optic type cable.

With a Spdif capable card on your computer, you can transfer your VF80 tracks to it and record and edit the tracks with the proper software. Also burn CDs.

ok thanks for the info guys!!

Audiophile 2496 is just one. It seems soundblaster has some spdif capable cards but how good they are I dont know.
If you dont have the optional CD burner on the VF80, I would think the Audiophile 2496 would be a good way to go into your computer. You have the option of more tracks and editing when you go into your computer anyway.

vf-80 spdif notes

I have a Fostex VF-08 (predecessor to the VF-80) and the SPDIF ports on it are of the COAX variety (I think that the VF-80 is the same) - this presented a problem, because the sound card on my pc only had an OPTICAL SPDIF port - hence you will be left with a choice of either buying another sound card for my PC or a converter box (FOSTEX COP-1) which will run about $50. Take a look at the equipment that you already have, because it's no fun dropping a wad of cash on a new toy and realizing that it is not compatible with all of your current equipment. (It becomes exponentially less fun as you amass a larger quantity of equipment)

ok thanks for the response guys....i'm looking into the cards :)
