Hey guys,

I'm playing guitar for a Shakespeare revival and I need some advice. The whole play (Two Gentlemen of Verona) has been adapted to fit into 1950's Midwest America and I'm playing snippets of classic 50's rock tunes in between scenes.

I'm currently figuring out which guitars and amps to have on stage and I'm debating this one song in particular. It's Santo and Johnny's classic haunt, Sleepwalk. I want to be as faithful to the original as I can w/o breaking out the old steel pedal guitar. (Like I have one, anyway)

So, I can either play it with a brass slide on my Gibson J-100 through the PA or my Epiphone Casino with a glass slide through my Cyber Twin.

What would you choose? And for an add on question, what kind of amp would you select from the cybertwin settings?

Here's a list:

Thanks,

Miles

Hey JR,

I haven't heard from you since last fall. Still playing hockey? It's starting to get cold here in Chi-town and I'm bout ready to bring out all the old gear and hit the ponds.

Acoustic, huh? I generally do pretty folky stuff so that would work. Would you use a brass or glass slide? I think I have a porcelain one and a bone one somewhere too.

Although I have heard some terrible versions of this tune.

Larry Carlton did a terribly bland version about two years ago on his album that won a grammy. Great guitarist, bad mistake.

I play hockey all year. Won the championship last season and had a career high in assists and points. This season we're #1 in the league and playing great. My points aren't any where near what they were last season, but I'm having fun. Just wish my wingers would score on my passes!

Anywho... On the acoustic, I use a steel slide. I used to use glass, but it didn't have quite the projection. Mellower tone though.

I'd think the Epiphone Casino thru a Fender amp setting played with the brass slide might get it closest to the original. Or which ever setup gives you the most sustain.
(Johnny used a Fender Stringmaster non-pedal steel and I think Santo played a semi-hollow body guitar.)

I agree, whatever gives you the most sustain.

Hard song to do without a lap steel.

yeah but it should be fun. I think I'm going to try the casino. Acoustic would be good for a mellower version, maybe a recording, but I have to do this live and want to project at least a little energy.

With the cybertwin, some of the settings have too much sustain, tho. I've found myself having to actively kill notes as opposed to letting them decay naturally.

I have an EP 45 rpm original round here somewhere that I got when it first came out, the cover was on my bedroom wall as a kid but got lost somewhere, but Santo definately was holding a Gibson 335.

Very cool, Clive! Thanks for the scoop!

Seeing as I'm 25 at this very moment, having the original ep is very impressive to me and even a bit historic.

It never ceases to amaze me what kind of people are on this board and what we collectively know, have or were a part of.

thanks again!
