i am using shitty gear since it's all i have right now to record my drums for my rock and roll band. i have 4 sam ash mics im putting into a radio shack 4 channel mixer into my zoom mrs-1044 (2 inputs only). i'd like to get stereo drums, but the problem is that the radio shack mixer defines stereo as "two of the four channels hard left, the other two hard right"- in other words, i can't pan how i want to. any advice on how to get good sounding stereo drums from such a setup? where should i point the 4 mics?

I'm not sure how you could do that. someonelse here could probly tell you. What i would do though is buy you a better mixer. if your buget is tight, then go with a berhinger mixer. there pretty good (for the price) and you can get a 4 channel one for $79 and they go on up to 16-channels.

go to: www.musiciansfriend.com for more info on them.

OH, i forgot to give you some mic placement tips. for the overheads, place the right one (if your standing infront of the kit)
over the edge of the highhat about as high as 2 drum sticks held end to end. do the same with the other one (left) only over the edge of the ride cym. for the snare, place the mic about 1" from the rim, 1-3" above the head. the kick: take off the front head and put a pillow up against the back head and place the mic (on a small stand) right outside the kick, facing the beater. all of this is a simple way of doing it, but it can get great sounds. listen to my song "Get Free" it's drums was miced the sameway as i just told you and the mics was: Overheads: Marshall mxl603s Kick: Shure beta 52 Snare: Shure sm57 (god bless it )

and i also used eq and compression on the tracks.

rent one! I just finished recording one of my bands onto a digital 16 track recorder/mixer with the best quality of mics available. Its a dream. It would have sounded professional if we knew what we were doing... but best of all we only payed 400 bucks for a month. Too steep? don't rent supreme quality like we did. You could probably get it down to about 200 and still have a good machine and decent mics.
