Yes, they are necessary components to learn, if you want to have GREAT sounding mixes.

Yeah man I hear you. My new tracks are gonna sound sick now that I've been learning mastering for about 4 months now & now have all the tools i need to polish my tracks. Gonna be buying me a tubemic here soon also. I got some tracks to I can show you the differences in sound. Never knew my tracks could sound so good.
