many of times ive heard people that record and then run the tracks through a limiter or compressor after words.... now how do i perform this if i have a computer based recording set up???

Out, through, in. Some programs have "insert ready" routing. Otherwise, just out, through, and back in a different channel.

i use Sony Vegas 6.0 just to let you know ... lol ill take your word for it IT IS YOUR JOB!!

thanks for the response

ok so i also have a Tascam FW-1804, so my chain would look like this

COMPUTER>TASCAM FW-1804 OUTS>COMPRESSOR/LIMITER>TASCAM FW-1804 INS>COMPUTER

????im a little confused on the subject

I'm a computer dummy, Nick, but is the compressor outboard you are using/thinking about using, or a plug-in? If outboard, whatcha' using?

What if you're not using a mixer? If you're route is: Mic -> DMP3 Pre -> MAudio 2496 -> N-Track, would you run the outs of the 2496 to the ins on the compressor and then back to the 2496? If so, I assume this would be the path for the mixing phase?

Thanks.

Dave

Honestly, I would use plugins instead of adding an extra D/A and A/D conversion phase just to get in and out of a DBX 166 or even an RNC. One thing you will have to battle is realigning your tracks that have been looped out through the compressor. By the time the track gets rerecorded through the conversion process and windows in and out, there will defiantely be some latency involved. I know that Cubase SX and Nuendo do have external routing though that automatically latency compensates for this exact scenario if you use an "external FX buss".

ART Pro VLA does great from the 2 buss for me.

yeah ill probably will use plug ins for this process... but i was just wondering how runinng tracks through things after they have been recorded works.. its pretty cool. Ive always noticed that professional recordings NEVER clip, when you put them in a program that tells shows you the waves and decibles they go all the way up to 0 but never over ... do they use a limiter?

i do want a compressor though, i dont even own one yet...

There are MANY professional releases that do clip:)

Also, its a different story running a mix through Weiss converters to a 2 buss Manley, API, Neve, Chandler or GML comp;)

i think nothing beats the good old analog compressor :)

I run my drums through them, and it changes the sound of my songs, day and night...it make it thick like its supposed to be.

if anyone wants to i can come up with something for you guys. You know.... before and after :)
