Hello,

I am trying to add more heavy percussion to my film score music... the only problem is I have NO idea how to mix large percussion sounds. Also, I don't have studio monitors so i have no clue how it sounds on other speakers...

Could you please check this short song out below and let me know how it sounds on your home speakers? If any levels need to come down... etc.

Thanks a lot!

Levels sound good on some basic computer speakers. I would maybe boost the low ends of the bigger drums to add more fullness. Maybe bring the high hat in the left ear up more to match the right one. And being you want it to sound live and natural, adjust the velocities of the drums especially on rolls because if a human were playing, they wouldn't hit each beat with the same velocity. a trick I do for rolls is that since I'm right hand dominant, the hits that would be with my right hand are higher than the left. I'm not a drummer so that might not be fact for drumming, but I've found that it does help. if you adjust the velocities enough, but not too much, it can add a lot of realism

To me the drums lack punch and should come up some. Mixing without monitors is basically impossible. Feels like the drums are lacking low end but not sure where - if I was to venture a guess it would be 60 ~ 100 Hz range - but i'm no drummer so you should probably get a second opinion

Thanks guys! I already hear marked improvement after implementing your suggestions... and you're right, it's time to begin the search for reference monitors... no more half assing this.

Thanks again!
