Royer Marshall mod...

Hey,
I met David Royer at NAMM last weekend, and I asked him about it. He told me that ADK had one of his modded mics in their booth. So, I went over there and listened to it and their original ADK51 which were through a Mackie 1202. I noticed that the Royer mod had a more open sound in the top end and a better low end. But all I really did for my test was say "check" or whatever to see what they sounded like. Anyway, I just got the Scott Dorsey circuit board in the mail and I'll post results.

Later,
Ian

Cool, I've been wanting to find that mag with Scotts mod in it, but I cant find it around here.
How much is it costing you, total, and how difficult does it seem for someone who has never done it before?
Peace.

Dorsey article

you mean the circuit board mod to make all the Shanghai made U-87-like mics better(ADK A51 and others)? It's in the Jan 2002 issue of Recording.

tubedude, you need to empty your private message box.....

I haven't built the board yet, but the parts aren't hard to find, in the article, Scott even gives all of the Digikey part #'s. Just simple soldering skills, but you also need to know how to clean the board well when you are done, or else little conductive paths from the solder-flux can raise the noise floor. It is way easier and cheaper than the Royer Mod, but I'm going to try the Royer mod eventually anyway. I think it cost me $20 total, which is an excellent price for the well made circuit board and the hard to find FET that is included.

tubedude,

I sent ya a PM...let me know if you need it.....

Just read the article in the magazine...hum!!! I'm wondering what to do...is it worth it to try the mod, or do I sell my 2001 and its companion...and put the money towards a better mic!

It depends, is the companion a 603? I have two and like them. As far as the 2001, you could "upgrade" it with Scott's mod for a mere 20-30 bucks, but to get a better mic, even a moderately better mic, might cost you more. I just ordered all the parts for my 2001 mod and my 1272 project today, has anyone ever heard of 1 giga-ohm resistors? Why couldn't I just leave it as an open?

Ian

Yo imagerec. I'm thinking about doing the Dorsey mod. Is that 20 bucks Scott's charging just for the board and the FET? If so, what's the approximate total cost of the remaining components?

Somebody else pointed out to me that the circuitboard print in the magazine is wrong (e.g. the backside doesn't match the frontside). Anybody know if there was a reprint posted somewhere? Just in case I get really ambitious....

I'm thinking about trying this out on one of those cheapo Nady LD mics. Should be fun anyhow. If it works maybe I'll wreck my V67!!!

I've got the 603...and its never seen daylight...I have no need for it. I'm waiting, I guess for someone to do the mod on the 2001 and get their response. I hooked mine up today...recording some voice...man does it sound &^%$! Is a mod going to make that much of a difference?

Hey T-Dude,

Why not both the 603 and the 2001...this way if you screw up on the mod...or don't like the way the 2001 should have sounded in the first place...then you'll have an xtra one to fall back on.

lavoz

Why would it mess up on you? If you mod that 2001, you'll probably never wanna use that 603 again anyway. :)
$45.02, accept it, hurry up. :)

I'm offering $40 for the 2001. I know it's crap, but I'll risk it and try the mod.:)

I think the parts cost like $15-20 depending on where you get them and the quality of the parts you get. I don't know about the board being wrong in the magazine, it is a two sided board, which means that the two sides are different technically, but the one I recieved looks great and I'm sure Scott would back his stuff up.

T-Dude,

Like I said before, the 603 has never seen the light of day...I don't use it and never plan on using it. As far as the 2001...it has less than 30 hours of use...heck, this thing looks like its still unused. If you're interested in the 603...e-mail, and go from there.
