mr. green christmas
Hey,

Trying to do a warped version of an odd beck tune called rowboat from one of his earliest records. I think johnny cash covered this as well although i've not heard his version.

Anyway, hope you enjoy it and please let me know of any glaring mix issues. I toned down the bass guitar quite a bit compared to recent stuff...is it too absent?

The vocals are somewhat intentionally sloppy (that's just the kind of song it is), but some of that is accidental as well :o:D.

Thanks,
Pete

This is a song for those lazy Sunday afternoons, Heat....:D
Don't know the original so I won't compare, but that's good. I dig the sloppiness in the voice, it fits the mood. Bass sounds oK to me. What's that sliding sound you have at the back, a guitar? I like the song.

Heat,
you know I'm a big Beck fan, and I always here a little bit of him in your stuff.
Nice to finally hear you cover Beck. Nice choice of songs too. This version is great. I really dig the backwards guitar/lap steel effect. This song has a country twang to it, but it's also trippy as hell because of the lyrics. You captured a very cool ambience and I'm guessing you recorded this on your cassette multitrack. Whatever you recorded it on, it sounds really great. Drums swing nicely. Vocals are nice and lazy. Guitars twang right. Do you program your drums, or are they real. I can never tell. If you do, what do you use? They sound very natural. Awesome stuff!

For some reason the sound reminds me of Rodger Miller's king of the road style.

Sounds great. Maybe get more low end out of the vocals. They sound kind of boxy. Maybe that's intentional. Other than that, no nits from me.

Thank you Joey. Do you mean during the instrumental passage? That is a slide guitar with some strange digital effects recorded backwards. The original has some authentic pedal steel...but, uh, that wasn't an option here :o:).

Hey, thanks ksounds :). So, you know this tune I guess. I love it for some reason. The lyrics really do it for me as nonsensical as they are at times.

Yes, this was recorded on 8 track cassette.

No, I don't have a drum kit :(. I usually use drum machines, but this is just a country western loop from a multi-FX guitar pedal :o. I slowed it waaay down and recorded it really hot at about +5db to break it up a bit and take some of cleanness away. I'm really glad it came out ok. Thanks again :).

Is that a good thing? Guess it depends, huh? Thanks for checking it out dodge:).

Great, thanks Greg. I had a buildup of upper mids intially in the lead vox and cut some of that with eq, but may've overdone it. That and I have a massive cold, so there's some unfortunate sinus sound going on there...;):)

the bass is fine - the vocal does sound a little treated BUT it works for me!
Nice one heat!

I'm not familiar with this particular song, but I'm not the least bit surprised to learn it's a Beck creation.

You definitely channel his personality and vibe into this cover, whether that was your intention or not.

I really like it... mix sounds great to me, fits the song like a glove.

Oh yeah...treated and then treated again. And then the treatment got treated. I don't know when to stop. Thanks for checking it out ray:).

Great, thanks for the good word Matt. Yes, it isn't a straight note for note cover by any means, but I wasn't reinventing it either, so sounding at least somewhat beck-ish is probably a good thing on this one. Thanks again.

I'm happily surprised as I thought this mix had potentially bad issues...but it seems to work ok...

I think the drums are too forward for this type of song.

I like the vocal treatment very much. Nice work.

All good, works for me Pete :).

Cool, thanks jedblue!

Thank you creep! Yes, I think you may be right on the drums...a byproduct of my remix where I brought down the guitars and vocals some, but left the drum level where it'd been. Now it's going to drive me nuts, damn you.

I used one of those old '80's ibanez analog delay guitar pedals on the vocals. Thanks again.
