Hello all.

I thought I would fish for some opinions on this latest project I am working on. There are some........um........performance issues....with this band. So I know that aspect of the recording is not that great. ;)
Right now there are just two guitar tracks and I am considering adding some more to the sound with re-amping but I haven't settled on a sound that I like for this yet. The guitars definitely aren't really happening yet.
I think the bass may be a little loud too, but I thought this band sounded better kind of bass heavy. Any opinoins on anything would be welcome. Especially where you think I should go with the guitar sound.

Thanks in advance!

Good sounding stuff. I actually think the kick is too loud. The whole mix sounds a little hollow.

Note I'm listening through computer speakers at work.

The kick probably is too loud, I have a tendancy to do that.
The band loves hearing it that way on my monitors, and I end up sticking with it sometimes when I shouldn't.

Thanks for the listen.

Hey Metalhead,

I had a quick listen on my pc speakers at work so:

Firstly I think the panning of the guitars needs to be re-addressed, what I would like to hear is one guitar down the centre and then when the other guitar comes in pan them hard left and hard right. The guitars sound like they need more power, they just seem to lack some ballz.

More guitar tracks would give more power and would help you achieve what it is with the guitars you want I'm sure!

The kick sounds very processed, too clicky, maybe add some low's on the kick to give it more oomph!.

Just a few points that stood out to me on my piddly pc speakers.

Overall though Metalhead, with a little tweaking you are on the way with this one!

I will have another listen tonite at home on my monitors.

Gorty :)

Yo Shithead.....er....Metaldude.... :D ......I agree with Gorty on getting the intro guitars to be a bit beefier. I think if you fix the kick, it will solve some issues as far as volume...guitars will probably seem to have more punch. I like the tone on the guitars. Lots of depth. Maybe more volume to them? Just a little?

Small nits, but you asked. Fix it Asshole.....er....Dude.... :p

Thanks guys. I hope I can get to that re-amping this weekend cause I really want to get done with this mix. I hate this band, lol.

Good idea about the panning. I wanted these guys to change their arrangements up a little so I could keep the mix solid. For instance, the bass drops out of the song so much and is so sparse sometimes that the mix just falls flat on it's face. I hate that. They wanted a heavy rhythm on one side and a piddly single note line on the other side during so many parts and it just sounds like ass. This song may not be as bad in that respect as some of the others, I don't remember. Anyway, I think I will end up doing some automation on the panning. ;) I hate it when I have to do more mixing work to make up for a bad arrangement....

One thing to tell them, is it's a pretty decent song. Just needs some tweaking...not a major overhaul. leave the basics, and refine....

Hey Metalhead,

Like Dogman mentioned, the song and mix in general is not too bad, just a few tweaks and a little retracking and you have a sweet little kick ass tune on ya hands!

Sorry, I didn't mean to rant so much there, and thanks again guys. This is actually one of the much better songs out of the bunch...I've just been getting frustrated working with them all, I've got 11 songs to mix and I'm very dissatisfied with about half of them....

but yeah, I think this one will be easy enough to straighten out. ;)

I feel your pain man. I've had some hellaciously disturbing bands in my studio. I even had to ask one group to leave and refund them when they started with a brutally racist song.

The individual elements in the mix are all clear and I'm partial to the overloud kick sometimes myself too. Each element on it's own sounds a bit smallish though... it's kind of hard to describe but like they all are 80% there on the beef factor. I agree with what was suggested about the guitars too.

When I'm stuck the one thing I find REALLY helpful is to A/B with a top quality recording in the same genre. Screamo guys like this you could listen to next to old Avenged Sevenfold or some Trivium.

Best of luck coming out sane!

I think I'd just layer some more guitars on, the bass sounds friggin cool. As for the drums, I don't think the kick is too loud, though I think it sounds triggered (is it?) which would be fine but the rest of the kit sounds mic'd. Maybe adding some bass to the kick might help, the vocals are at about the right volume for me. The material isn't all that bad, I think if they tightened up it would help your cause out.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I am definitely going to layer that guitar some more. And once I dial in the bass to work with that, I think that will fill up the void of heaviness in this song. I'll probably work with the drum mix quite a bit too.

And oh yeah, the kick is triggered.

Thanks! ;)

Okay, so here is another mix of this song. I think it's a big improvement, but probably still needs a little work.

Hey Metalhead,

Sounding pretty good, a little boomy.
I can't tell if it is the guitars or the bass, I am guessing the bass. Perhaps a little less lows and a slight boost in the mids for the bass just to give the bass a little more definition.
The rest of the mix is starting to sound pretty good there metalhead.

I'm going back for another listen!

I can't understand a word the vocalist is screaming/growling.

Thanks Gorty. I think it may be a little combination of the guitars and the bass, but the bass is probably the bulk of it. I'll have to go at it with some EQ.

Sounds a bit better man. I won't say a great improvement, as the first one was pretty good itself, but sounds a bit tighter. Still really dig the guitar tone. There might still be a bit too much bottom end....the bass maybe, as Gorty said. The kick doesn't seem to be too boomy. Nothing horrible man.
Again, good guitars. Crank em up a bit.... :D
