Rough 'edgy' recording

THEN, there are the fake lo fi guys, pros who record everything well in a studio, then shit all over the tracks in the mixing stage to make it sound "lo fi", that is stupid.

I am intrigued. You imply the existence of recent albums that were not shit upon after recording. Where can I find these albums?

I kid. I kid.

Of course I know those albums don't exist!

I kid. I kid.
For real this time. :D

I meant shit all over it to make it sound lo fi specifically, something that it wasn't to start with, also, the next sentence after your quote implied that the pros shit on it too. Also, there are albums out there with very little shit or anything of the sort on them, those are the good ones!

if you like lo-fi and metal

Check out an album by Mayhem called "Ordo ad Chao"

dark, lo-fi but professionally and utterly done recording that blows my mind every time I listen to it. There is a place for the rawness lofi in this industry.

I think Chibi nappa's first post summarized it pretty well.

The difference between "edgey" and "crappy" is mostly about intentionality (as subjective and vague as that is.)

If your vocalist just can't sing in tune no matter how he tries, that's crappy. If you vocalist intentionally adds some pitchiness in such a way that it really emphasizes part of the song, that's edgey.

Although like any effect, intentional edginess can be overdone or done without tact and subtlety. As Glen said, the fake record pops effect got really old really fast.

Im in quite the same position. I do love stuff with character and I think that's what's wrong with a lot of modern recorded music (especially metal and the more extreme, the more that applies) it just seems like a maddening, over sterile environment. Like an aural sanitarium (or what I imagine the inside of a sanitarium to look like, the over compensation of the sanitation being even more maddening.). Anywho, I think it's about doing the best you can with what you have and really add your own vibe to the tracks. That doesn't necessarily mean make it worse on purpose, just something quirky and uncommon. Im trying to start my own record label and it's a bit daunting with that ethos (I think i would be very open to criticism that it's illegitimate) but I solider on. The main thing, I think is to keep messing around with the tracks and knowing that you've got it sounding as good as you possibly could have. That's all that matters at the end of the day, I think. That you've done all you can and that your pleased with it.

At what point in recording does it go from 'edgy' to 'amateur'

Due to my financial situation im well aware that my recordings are going to sound very different to mainstream stuff, but I want to make that a selling point.

Anybody else had any ideas like this or know of any bands who do this on purpose?

I think a lot of what The Hives do will satisfy your hunger for edgy sounding recordings. Check em out see if you can find anything on their sessions.

Hope this helps,
-Barrett
