Room mic? Guitar

Hey

how do professional recording studios set up a room mic for the guitar cabs? I know they put it like a foot or two back but how do they compromise for the phase issues? do the math and add delay? push back the waveform vector?

Thanks

I dont think anyone compromises with phase issues as such. If you set it up correct you wont have phase issues or at least you wont have something that is detrimental to what you want to achieve. If you get it right you can make your recordings so much better. room miking is pretty hard to get right sometimes. And not every room is the same. Its alll about listening for sweet spots and listening to what the room sounds like. I would normally put a mic about six feet back or so, maybe about six feet up as well. Of course this works for my room not necessarily in every room. Just got to expirement i believe. Its much easier if you have someone playing or a test tone and someone moving the mic around in the room whist you monitor from another room.

I think there's always going to be phase if you place 2 mics at different distances from the source.

I would just move it around the room and find the spot that sounds best.

Yea, I don't think I've ever had phasing issues (or noticed them, anyway) when mic'ing my amps with two mics, but it may very well have been present, and I didn't even notice due the fact that I liked the sound I got... now Im suspect :)

You could also try recording a guitar part DI'd into a recorder, and then reamp it back out to the amplifier to play while you are testing mic positions, etc., if you don't have someone else around to play while you do the setup.

There are no phase issues with a single mic. Close micing is in,2" off axis from the cone. Move mic to get the desired sound.
