Rolls RPB623 Phantom Power Supply

Has anyone had experience with the Rolls RPB623 Phantom Power Supply ... or, for that matter, Rolls products in general? I'm still new to the audio game, and I'm used to seeing names like Roland, Tascam, Yamaha, etc.

Most of the phantom power supplies I've seen (in my VERY brief search) are not rack mountable. This one is, and it only takes up one rack space.

I've got a Roland VM-3100 digital mixer. Unfortunately, only the first two channels have supplied phantom power. This might be a great step to allow me to use condenser mics on all channels, but I'd like to here some input.

PS - This unit is on zZounds for $119.95. Good price?

that's a lot of money... you may as well just get a preamp with phantom power on it?? for instance a presonus offers channels, with phantom power on each for $150...you can get it for about $130 if you haggle at guitar center.

It's a real supply, so it should work well: http://www.rolls.com/data/rpb623man.pdf. The +48v source is decently powered, and decently regulated. It should work pretty adequately.

Its little brother has some major problems- the PB23 dual-channel adapter you can get from Guitar Center only produces about 36 volts (using a charge-pump quadrupler on its 9v wall-wart supply), and has a host of other niggling annoyances, which I talked about here in an article some time back, but can't find because the search function is still scrod....

Bottom line: the rack mount supply will probably work very well. The non-rack supply will probably give you heartburn, especially if you get it from GC and they neglect to include the included wall-wart.

Hope that helps...
