Hello,

I was wondering what is meant by the term "Roll Off" as in when a mic has a roll off switch... or just roll off in general?

thanks.

It attenuates the mic's response above or below a given frequency.

A high frequency roll off switch will attenuate frequencies above a set frequency, this is useful for recording sources that have a lot of unwanted high freq energy.

A low frequency roll off switch will attenuate frequencies below a certain frequency, this is useful for recording sources which tend to be boomy, i.e., some acoutic guitars, etc. It also will help reduce the effect of 60 cycle hum if it's present in your system.

Low freq rolloff is also good for getting rumble from your room that can work it's way into your mic through the stand and from tapping your foot and stuff like that.

I'd address a boomy guitar with mic positioning before I'd use a lowcut switch.
