Can a Roland XV-5050 synth be used with a guitar for effects purposes? Similar to how the Roland GR-33 can make a guitar sound like a piano, etc? The only reason I ask is that I'd rather have a guitar synth in a rack with an external midi footswitch, rather than have the whole thing on the ground like the GR-33.

I'm not a guitarist, but I know people who do MIDI guitar projects...

I have a Roland XV5050 synth. Remember that it's a synth module and NOT a guitar/MIDI interface - whereas the GR-33 is.

You'd still have to have some kind of MIDI interface for your guitar, but once you're converting your guitar notes into MIDI data, then the XV5050 can give you pretty much any sound you want.

- Bear in mind that the XV5050 is NOT an effects box. It can only effect it's own synth sounds. You cannot route audio through it and add distortion for example -

I hope the above's not too patronising!

Cheers.

:D

You didn't sound patronizing at all, and thanks for the response. The guitar amp I use has a Midi-in and Midi-out on the back of it for a Midi effects loop. Wouldn't I be able to run the XV-5050 through that effects loop, and just buy a Roland midi footswitch to change effects on the 5050?

In theory, yes, but I'm afraid I'm not an expert on MIDI guitar, sorry!
