Hi, I have a Roland Xp-30 keyboard, and MC-50 sequencer. I have learned how to record different tracks, but I cant fingure out how to get different instruments to play together. I record using different instruments, but in play back they all play as one instrument. I have been told I need to set my midi channels, but I cant figure it out. Can anyone help me please ?
Thanks
E.

I have an MC50 MKII.Each part you want to have played by a different instrument sound must be assigned it's own MIDI channel. If you have alredy recorded the stuff onto the MC50,you can do this with each MC%) track by using "EDIT 8-Change MIDI Channel." Let's say you have a drum part on track 1,a bass on track 2,and a piano on track 3.Go to Edit 8 and specify which track you want to changer the MIDI Channel on.Let's start with the drums on track 1.Once you're on EDIT 8,you can change the track to any of the available 16 MIDI channels,so let's put the drums on Channel 10.Now,go back to EDIT 8 and change the bass on track 2 to MIDI channel 2 and go back again to EDIT 8 and change the piano to MIDI channel 1.Now,all the data on each MC50 track will be sent out only on the MIDI channels you have specified for each part, but we're not done because we now need to tell the XP-30 which of it's many programs to use for each of these parts. You do this with Program Change messages which can also be sent by the MC-50.Go into Microscope mode and get mEDIT 3 "CREATE EVENT."Select PG (Program) and specify the MIDI channel to which the message will be sent.Select the appropriate program for the drums, bass and piano (You'll have to create a separate message for each MIDI Channel you're using) and now, each time you play back the sequence, not only will the MC-50 tell the synth which notes to play, but the programs will be switched back to the ones you wrote messages for from wherever they were before.Don't forget to save all your work to a floppy before powering down!
