Greetings all,
This is my first official post. Glad to be here. Anyway...
I have a Roland XP-50 keyboard and Cakewalk PA 9.0. I have defined instruments, assigned different channels to the keyboard's different expansion boards, etc. My problem is that the patch being played is not the patch that I selected in Cakewalk. For example, I'll open Track 1, assign Channel 2, select the source, and the 'Vienna Strings' patch. When I play the keyboard, I do not hear Vienna Strings. Instead, I hear some other patch. And this happens for every track, every channel, and most every patch.

I believe the problem is not with Cakewalk but with the keyboard. Is there something I should be changing in the keyboard itself? or what?

Thanks for any help.

Is there any relationship between the patch number you select in Cakewalk and the resulting patch number on your keyboard (give us some examples of what patch number you select in Cakewalk and what patch you see on the keyboard).

I don't know if I'm being obtuse here, but are you both sure that your synths use a strict GM/XG (whatever) soundset in strict order? It's amazing how many don't. Or have you already programmed in all the names of your patches individually? (That's what I had to do with my Roland D110).

Tim and Matt,
As far as a relationship between the patch in Cakewalk and the patch displayed on the keyboard...There doesn't appear to be a relationship at all. In fact, the patch displayed on the keyboard remains the same regardless the patch I choose in Cakewalk.

Regarding Matt's question...I'm sorry but I don't quite understand your comments. I'm pretty new to this whole thing. When you say that you had to program each patch in individually are you referring to within your keyboard?

I'm about ready to pay one of you to fly to Kentucky and figure this out.
Thanks,
Donavan

Hmm, OK, do you mean that the patch coming out of the keyboard remains the same regardless of the patch that you tell Cakewalk to play?

What I was trying to explain was that in Cakewalk, it is possible to edit the names of the patches in line with the set of sounds that your synth plays. But this is unimportant if your answer to the firstquestion was yes. If your keyboard is playing the same sound whatever then maybe you have the keyboard in the wrong mode or something. It's a while since I've used my Roland, but if I remember correctly, in one mode it will follow midi program changes, but in another it follows the patch that you enter on the front of the synth.

If you want instructions on how to edit patch names, I'm happy to assist.

Matt

ps Wow, louisville, home of slint, Rodan, Rachel Grimes etc, I would like to go someday hehe.

Matt,
Thanks for the insights. I'm going to assume that you're right about the Roland not being in the right mode or something to that effect. I'm taking the keyboard in to a shop nearby that uses Cakewalk in their studio. We'll just plug in my Roland and see what they can figure out.

Farewell from Louisville, land of horses and big-haired women.

Thanks again.

OK, you're using an XP-50, right? I just checked up on my XP-80 (should be the same) - If you go to "System" then select "MIDI" option (the center button under the LCD display) twice (to get to the second MIDI screen) you will see there are two options - "Rx Program Change" and "Rx Bank Select" - make sure they are both set to "On".

Also, each part of a "Performance" setup (if that's what you're using) has a "Rx Program Change Switch", which I imagine has to be on. I don't have the manual handy, and it's been a while since if sequenced it from an external sequencer, so I can't remember if there's anything more that needs to be examined.
