Hi everyone. Can anyone tell me how to transfer the audio files from a recording session on my Roland VS-1680 to my PC for editing?

Also, can my PC (I use Sonic Foundry and Vegas) read the Roland files directly or must they be converted?

Thank you for helping me out. Sincerely, David Kwock

If you don't know then now you know.... The best VS resource on the planet is the VSPLANET.

But the best way to trasfer tracks would be using the 2 tracks at a time using the digital outputs and sync'd up with midi time code or mmc. Do a search for that stuff one the VSPLANET and if you can't find the answers that way then you should just pst a question.

Peace...

Thanks Lazi For Link and Answer

Thanks, Lazi. I checked VS Planet link you sent to me, searched the forum using "transfer to PC" and found numerous threads on point (too many to read).

Basically, a transfer can be 2 tracks at a time via SPDIF, or 8 at a time via analog out.

Disappointing news. 2 tracks at a time is too cumbersome for what I'm doing... tracking recording sessions of 6 to 7 hours yielding actual recording time of 2 to 3 hours of 8 tracks at once.

Now, I'm thinking of selling the VS 1680. I was going to use it to record the 8 buses on my Mackie 24-8. This was intended to be a back up recording for my Mackie SDR 24/96 which records each of the up to 24 tracks separately.

I got "spoiled" on the Mackie SDR which allows me to plug the removable hard drive into a firewire bay so that the PC can open the wav files directly from the drive and import the files into the software or copy them on an internal drive.

Once again, thanks for the link and the answer. Now I know. Best Regards, David

Yes 2 track is a real pain which is why I have never done it. If I was ust to set it up one time as a template in SONAR it'd probably be cool. Just setup auto punch times and sheck on it every 5 or 6 minues while watching a movie or something,. Seems like it just still way too much...

LAZI.....

Thanks Seanmorse79

I didn't sell my VS yet; mostly because I really can't get very much for it and the music equipment swap meet only happens once every three months here in Honolulu, Hawaii and I missed the last one.

But in the back of my mind I always wondered about the SCSI port because it should be harddisk to harddisk so the whole session should be transferred at once. Good tip on optimizing.

Anyway, I did a couple of searches of the VS forum on SCSI tranfers but couldn't find anything. I may not have been searching correctly.

I have Sound Forge 5 and I have Vegas so all I need is a SCSI drive. Then I can use the VS to back up my Mackie SDR 24/96 recordings. From my Mackie 24-8 bus miser, I send 24 tracks via the direct outs to the Mackie SDR. And from the 8 bus on the mixer, I can send 8 tracks to the VS. But in the past, I didn't know how to get the 8 tracks from the VS to the PC.

I'm recording a 1/2 TV game show that's done in a live format before a studio audience so having a back-up 8 track recording on the VS is a REALLY, REALLY good thing to have.

Thanks, again Seanmorse79

If you use the VS to record in MAS mode only, you can use a program called vs2wav to transfer every single take and track into wav-files (16-bit). But you'll need an external scsi drive to transfer, a.s.o. You might try a search on vstransfer at the planet. the problem is that if you do overdubbing, your tracks will be split quite around, but if you end up copying (via RECORDING!) the bounced tracks to new ones and delete everything else, it should work... But 8 tracks only to record and play at the same time.

Okay... we tracked 5 songs last Friday on the 1680 (drums, bass & a scratch track), but we weren't able to get an external SCSI drive in time. So...

He's going to drop off the 1680 tomorrow nite and I need to transfer the tracks digitally into the PC (C-Port, Nuendo). The C-Port has optical and coaxial S/PDIF.

Having never recorded from any digital source, can anyone explain how I can do this without spending the night buried in the VS manual?
