Roland VS1680 Pres

What do you guys think about the Roland VS1680 pres? Seems I get pretty clean gain out and I usually crank them pretty high on overhead drum mics to drive some SM57s, - my ear is not completely tuned with picking up subtle recording distinctions yet but it sounds good to me. The reason I ask is I'm thinking of using it less and going direct to the computer (getting a good audio interface) - I have a Delta 66 and an Omni I/O breakout box that is on the fritz (I have to jiggle cables...) so starting to think about changing my setup. The roland can record 8 tracks at once which is plenty for drums (but only has two XLR... )

Is it more mic recording thru XLR's you need ?

I use my mackie 1202vlz pro which gives me 4 XLR's mic inputs.

I use my VS1680 as a portable recording studio that goes out of the studio: much easier and more reliable then a computer in high end recording projects. Although Mac OS/computers are getting to be more and more stable they still crack especially in heavy duty processing.

The VS1680 is in my opinion a one trick pony: it simply records without failure.

After recording with my VS and come back to the studio I apply the VS effects using the installed effects boards. If need be I transfer some audio tracks into DigitalPerformer 6 and dress up/repair those tracks.
