Hello everyone!
I'm looking for a multitrack recorder. I need a portastudio that can record up to eight sources at one time. My budget is 750 $.
A friend of mine is selling his "old" Roland Vs1680 for 560 $. I'm looking also for a Tascam Dp24 (new)!
Which one has the best audio quality ?

I don't know much about either but after searching for a VS1680 on google to compare it to the tascam, it looks like that's a steep price for a vs1680.... Seeing them online for around $200-250.

Looking at the specs on each, you'd probably be able to get a decent recording out of either of them.

@pikingrin:
Really ? :) I'm from Italy and here the cost (used) is around 430 $ (350 €) for the VS1680.
To tell the truth, my friend includes in the price (560$) two vs8f2 effects expansion board and a Mindprint DI port.

Anyway, the point to me is: I need to record with a multitrack portastudio (8 tracks at once). I don't need a computer for editing or mixing, but i need of course to copy the final master or mixdown from the multitrack recorder to the computer. With Tascam Dp24 the process is easy because of the SD card or Usb, with Roland I think it's harder because the Vs1680 has the SCSI port and the cd burner is too slow (1x).
Now if the quality audio of the two machines is similar (preamps and effects), I'll take the Tascam for sure, just because it's easier to copy the final work to the pc. But If Roland Vs1680 has still better audio quality, I think I need to find another solution to copy the final work on the computer.
Can anyone give me some advice to resolve this situation or simply help me choose between the two multitrack recorders ?

Thanks!

The internal routing on the VS's was a nightmare... I hated mine, got rid and picked up an Akai DPS12i which served me for several years. I only recently sold it and wish I hadn't.
Look at the DPS16 if you really want a 'all in' multitrack recorder.
Only reason I'd get one now would be to track out of an mpc or similar though to be honest.
