Roland VS 1880 & Aux Routing

I'm new to this forum and hoping I can get some much needed help -

I'm not particularly satisfied with the compression/limiting offered internally (thru FX cards) on my 1880. I'd love to tap into some of my old reliable external rack units (for this and other FX scenarios), but have hit a wall.

I find the Owner's manual a cumbersome read, particularly where bussing, and Aux routing is concerned. I'm wondering if anyone can clarify in plain English for a "newbie" to digital workstations.

I've been able to route channels to the ext compressor/effects, but I can't figure out how to get them back in, and monitor/record the processsed signal.

I own a 880EX and a 1680, so I think it works the same for you... Once you've managed to get the thang out, the back in is rather easy: switch the mute switch ON for the channels to be compressed externally. Now you don't hear them. Then take your compressors OUTPUT and plug it into a VS input. Go into INPUT mixer mode on the VS, switch mute off, and adjust the input level with your input knob and fader. It is NOT possible to record the input onto the same track as the uncompressed track, as you'll have ugly feedback...
