Roland VS 1680?

In continuing my research to provide me with the best recording equipment for my needs, I'm wondering if the sound quality of the Roland VS1680 would be as good using a mixer,HD recorder,software etc. Particularly, will the Roland be sufficient for recording and mixing my music to send to a mastering house, or would the other setup I mentioned be better?
 
Hi, Junior, I own 1680, and find it's great. You are limited to 8 record tracks at a time and 16 total. To expand you buy another 1680. I found that I needed a mixer anyhow, and then just a bit of outboard gear, then some more...so in the end it comes down to the sound more than price. I think mine sounds excellent, and it's much more reliable than what I see from the computer based guys. Of course I don't have experinece with computer based recording, either.
 
Thanks Larry. I think I'm going to purchase the VS1680. How much did you pay for yours, and does anyone know of any bargains on a new VS1680?
 
With both FX cards, I paid 2900. The FX cards are options, but necessary by anyone's standards. 1680s are about 2100 now, and I just saw FX cards for 250ea. Check www.vsplanet.com search for 250 for the store's name. There's a dedicated 1680 forum there run by the same bbs software as this board.
 
I use a VS1680 with a Mackie SR24-4 mixer. This is *the* ultimate setup. Everything is totally smooth and flexible. In "jam" mode, you can use the VS with 2 FX cards as a super high quality 4 FX processor. In recording mode, you can send 8 inputs at a time to the VS.
Other users on vsplanet.com have suggested this setup.
Having said that, the VS standalone RULES
