right, i have a roland TD6 and use cubase SX3 and i would like to know if i can hook my roland brain up to the my computer and have a whole midi recording thing going on, and if i can how do i do it and what equipotment do i need?

ta, matt.

You can hook the TD6 to a computer and use it as a MIDI controller/MIDI module. Your computer needs a MIDI in/out interface. You take the MIDI out from the module to the MIDI in of the computer and then take the MIDI out from the computer to whatever MIDI module (includeing the TD6) you choose.

Sure. All you really need equipment-wise is an audio interface on your computer that supports MIDI. Many of the USB/Firewire models have MIDI built-in.

From there, you'll just need recording software to record the MIDI, like Cakewalk, Cubase, etc.. (plenty of shareware options on the cheap - I recommend Reaper). If you buy an audio interface, they'll usually include an LE version.

If you want to use the computer to generate the drum sounds (wayyyyyy higher quality than what you hear from the Roland box), you can grab a sampler/vsti sample set. I've used Drumkit from Hell and Cakewalk Studio Instruments with decent results.

even if you just have a cheap soundblaster you can plug a midi adapter into the joystick port. I think they still sell those joystick to midi adapters???

aah, i was hoping to use it as a real time thing, so i could sample any drumkit i can and use those sounds, and i just rememberd im on vista and that it has big midi problems, otherwise i think i would rarther just play/record the stuff myself :)

thanks anyway guys.

vista has midi problems? first I've heard of it. my friend has the exact same setup I have soundcard wise, only he uses vista and I use XP. his midi input works just fine. you can do it in real time providing you have:

1. a soundcard that supports ASIO, a good option is the M-audio Audiophile if you need one cheap.

2. a midi cable

3. a recording program that also supports ASIO, which is pretty much all of em nowadays.

4. A VST drum instrument (take your pick.)
