I had a pair, and I liked them. Pretty detailed, good sounding. Not real hyped in the high end. I paid $300 for them the first time I started setting up a home studio; had to sell them off in a divorce.
This time, due to budget constraints, I went with the MXL 603s stereo pair, largely on the recommendations of people on the various boards. For $200 (and sometimes a little less) you get the matched, mogami wired 603's, and shockmounts.
Honestly, Other than these mics being a tad less 'dark' than the NT5's, not much difference in the detail or quality of sound.
So far, I've used them on drum overheads (sound great, very natural) and as as stereo pair on the top rotor of
a Leslie 122 and they sounded great there, too. I've used them on an acoustic guitar, as well, also with good results.
I think the extra $100 for the NT5's (less shockmounts as well, mind you) is not neccessary. I think you'd be just as happy with the 603's. This is, of course, just my opinion, and I am not an expert-but I've had both and am just as happy with the MXL's as I was with the NT5's at 2/3rds the price.
