As an added note to my previous comments on this mic, I had 3 vocalists try it at my studio this weekend, all were "extreemly" impressed! Hadn't even thought about using this for vocals when I purchased it...give this mic a test drive when you can, amazing at this price!

Stop it! you're making me want it more and more. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I need a soundcard and monitors first!!!!! (Or do I???) :D :D

Cooperman, it was $295.00 (Canadian)
Sounds like a lot, but our dollar is worth about 70 cents (US)
As a side note, had another singer/poet who does speech recording (excellent voice) in last night, he has recorded literally all over the world, has what I consider a great ear for mics, started to laugh after hearing this mic, not at the mic, but at how "pure" it sounded!

BW

In case I didn't make my point clear enough above, the laughter I mentionned above was joyous, not pained...he loved the clarity and sharpness (his word) of the mic, and thought it was in the $800. plus range. When he left, he said he was definitely going to buy one...we'll see!

So what's that around US$210??? I guess that's pretty comparable to the C1000... which I guess is it's main competition and the mic I'm sure Rode are trying to crush... and by the sounds of it they are in with a pretty good chance...

...and also you said you hadn't intended to use it on vocals... what did you originally buy it for? Drum overheads?

Rode NT3 is for sale at musiciansfriend.com for $160 USD. I was going to get one from GC when I had an open credit there ... just so I could be the first at HR.com to have one! :) GC never had it in stock and also never called me if/when it came in so ... I never wound up getting one.
I'm also interested in how it's working in other areas? ie. acoustic guitar, overheads, etc. Don't spare the details ... :)

Cooperman/all...I originally bought this strictly as a mic for recording acoustic guitar, possibly live cymbal (overheads)...I have to say it is excellent in the acoustic guitar situation, haven't tried the cymbals yet...this is a very sensitive mic, yet quiet. Tonality is very natural on acoustic guitar, doesn't seem to add much of it's own colour, if anything, maybe a slight bit of top end/crispness. I personally have never experienced a mic that reacts this precise to placement on the guitar, I know they all do to some degree, just not as (dynamically) as this. It really is like turning up and down a "good" eq!
I'll stop now, I usually don't go on and on, especially a week or two after purchase (we all get used to things, don't we?)
Looks like I was the first to get one of these here, that doesn't matter much to me, but does anyone else have one, and what do they think...just want to verify I'm not quite "out of my ears and mind"

bwindsor: think you could provide us with some mp3s to listen to?

Mr Lip,

Not possible on the MP3's...sorry!
Wouldn't give you a "true" picture anyway, just a rough idea.

Demo live if you can,

Hey coop - you can't stick a C1000 on a kick drum or infront of a marshal at 11, but you can with an NT3. 140+SPL rating.

Another Rode to go down is the Classic II valve. very smooth for acc guitar :) Rod McCormack, probably rated next to Tommy Emmanuel as our best guitarist always uses the classic II for acoustic. In fact when he was in Nashville recently he had to have one flown in from LA.

cheers
John

I pick up my NT3 today after work.
I do hope it is as good as everyone seems to think it is.
I was seaking to the rode national sales rep(in OZ) I told him to look up this site.Maybe he has and is giving it a favourable mention under a false name;)
Actually I've heard it is really good for acoustic guitar which is what I'm after. Also it is meant to be good for sticking in front of your guitar amp(as john sayers has mentioned). It is meant to be an all-rounder which is handy 'cause I can't afford 100 different mic's.
HEY JOHN what were those monitor's you mentioned the other day for around $795.I forget.
Everyone should look at john sayers website-he is building a cool studio I had the privalage to see myself! very impressive;)

Yeah I spoke to Colin Hill from Rode about this site and he felt it would be inappropriate to apper on this site ..sortta spamming really?? But he has read some of the posts regarding the Rode mics and was very impressed :)

He did point out that the NT3 uses the internal battery all the time (more stable and quieter) and only uses the phantom power to recharge it. That might explain the good signal to noise.

cheers
John

Hey Peter, make sure you tell us how the mike is. A full report, don't skimp.

And how it compares to any other mikes that you've heard or have?

I'm curious how this thing stacks up. I might be in the market for one. But I've found crown cm700's on some web page for $180, so it will be a tough call on my part when it finally comes down to it.

Thanks.

no worry's jet rocker I'll let you know.
And john ,the sales manager at gold coat music where I bought the thing ,his name is colin hill-wierd eh!!
jet rocker-it might be a little while before I give it a good test 'cause I'm shifting on the weekend-propably take a little while to set eveything up.
Unless I just set up me little studio and let my wife do everything.I'm sure she could carry the fridge up three flights of stairs;)

HEY JOHN
battery all the time? uses phantom to recharge it?
In the instructions it says either use phantom or battery-it does not say both!!I think I will give colin a call(or email at least).
I'd hate to screw my mic' up:)

It's so cheap I think I just might buy one.

Has anyone compared this thing to the NT1 for vocals?

NT1 against NT3

I have both mics and have to say for a meager $30 more the NT1 is outstanding in comparison. As far as another post I read about the vocalist or input device having an effect on different mics...your mixing board is your friend not your enemy. Your mic will only produce what you allow it to. I have used my NT1 for accoustic guitars, amps and overhead. For the price you cant beat it..I also have a NTV which is by far the biggest bang for your buck.
