i don't have much experience with vocal mics, as the last band i was in was an instrumental group..... so far the only thing i've recorded vocals with is a 58.... so i am very new to this whole vocal recording thing.... after running a search on the nt3, i realise this is probably not the best vocal mic, but it has good all round studio apps.....i want some thing warm (i think thats the term) but i don't want to spend too much since i don't record a hell of a lot of vocals......

remembering that the marshall mics are as yet unavailable in australia, any suggestions????

I have 2 Rode NT3s and have found them to be nice sounding on vocals - they're best use is as a stereo pair or on instruments, but they certainly hold their own on voice quite nicely

Doc,
The vocalist in a local blues outfit uses a NT3 for live work exclusively.........actually sounds fine.

I've been using a NT3 with the Art MP Tube for vocals and it sounds real good.
What equipment are you using yours with?

Hey Doc

Saw footage of Steve Prestwitch (Cold Chisel Drummer) and his band recording live in a studio the other day. He had a NTK, and the chicks doing backings had NT3's.

By the way, they're going for $295 a piece at Music Lab, Melbourne

Enjoy

thanks for the heads up mark! $295 hu? i was gonna pay $370...very cool

Sample

Well, keeping in mind that different mics sound better on different people, the NT3 is very crisp sounding and on a thin voice, that's not good, in my opinion. BUT as an all around mic, It's amazing..and for $150..you can't beat it, in my opinion. It's externally polarized <not electret>, a medium size diaphragm 3/4", and can be used on stage as well as studio.

I ABC'd 3 mic's on a vocal track for the last guy I did..I'll put up samples for you..no eq, compression, nothing..all right into onboard Mackie preamps.

1 is a Shure Beta 57a
2 is an AKG C3000b with no pads or LF rolloff
3 is the Rode NT3

They were about a foot away from the guy, with the AKG in the middle and the other 2 on the sides of it <looked neato>, pop filter was in front of guy, not mics.

I used the C3000b, and EQ'd it some, and compessed here/there.

Finished mix is

oh

And if you wanna hear em on acoustic guitar, see if this works.

There's 3 guitars in there, 3rd one comes in around 1:55

The guy never paid me for it, so if he has a problem with people listening oh frickin well. After listening 50000x I wish I had tamed the fret noise a little, but I wanted a very real, non-hyped, guy sitting there singing/playing kinda sound.
