Hi, let me say this is a great bulletin board, wish I'd found it sooner. I have a CAD E100 that I've been very pleased with over the last couple years for guitars and vocals. I have a little money to spend to upgrade my studio, and have my eye on the NT1 as an alternative mic. I understand that the NT1 is warmer. Could anyone go into detail as to the relationship of these mics? Are they very similar/different? Would my cash be better spent on an outboard preamp in the $200 range? I currently use the pre's on my dps12.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Hey Starnes,
Welcome aboard.

I have the E200 from CAD witht the multi patterns and dual large capsule. I think the E100 is a medium capsule.

The CAD stuff is more true but not necessarily the best for everything. I also tried out a NT1 the other weekend. For the price I was knocked out. It is only 1 pattern but the sound is very present and round. It would be tough to hide it in the mix. In other words it will bring whatever it records to the surface. The mic is the more important part of the scenario in my opinion. You can always eq a bit of the imperfections of the mic pre on your recorder. I use the VS1680 and I think most of the pres in these dig all in one units are brittle sounding. If you don't have a great sound going to the pre though you can't change something that isn't there.
