Between being and nothing
Hey all!

I'm looking for a condenser mic that doesn't necessarily require an external phantom power source. I've heard that the Rode NT-3 and the AKG C1000 can run on 9 volt batteries as an internal source of phantom power.

Anyone care to share their experiences on them, in regards to tone, hardware capabilities, and the like?

Thanks.

I've used a pair (actually 3, but one fell off the ceiling onto concrete) of C1000's for awhile now. Good mic's, I use them for drum overheads, but I've had good luck using them on acoustics in a stereo pair config and also on vocals. Compared to the NT3, no idea, never tried them. But in speculation, I doubt the NT3's would be much, if any better in this price range.

The C1000 will take a 9V battery and run for quite awhile on it, but if you have phantom, use it.

NT3

I have a pair of NT3's and I really like them. They sound very good as overheads - and even as a vocal mics. However, I have never compared them to the C1000's. Maybe if you could get someone to reply who has actually tried both mics...

There is a "huge" difference between the Rode NT3 and the AKG C1000, just a-b them!...this is not subtle, and I've never met anyone who did this comparison and still chose the AKG...I am somewhat biased, as I do own a pair of NT3's, but I did "side by side" these mics, and it was no contest...try it!
Technically, the Rode is quieter, hotter output and has a nice top end sparkle (not thin) while maintaining a round bottom (tight, not loose)...good for lots of apps (acoustic guitar, some vocals, drum overheads, etc.)

Basically, I consider this mic a C1000 killer!

Uh...I meant to reply to this thread...DUH!!

Thanks guys!!!

I'll look into the NT-3! :)

So for acoustic guitar the NT-3 is a goer!!!!
Thats the 98% workload mine will be doing.
It is in my price range thats for sure.
And being an aussie It would be cool to buy aussie made.
How does it compare to the NT-1,which is a little over budget for me at the moment.
cheers Peter.

Here in the US...

At my local guitar center, there's a 40 dollar difference between the NT-1 and the NT-3. I initially was considering the NT-1 before I settled on the Oktava MK-319. I still like it, but I need something "portable", which is why I'm now looking into "self-powered" mics.

In OZ the NT-1 is about $595 and the NT-3 is about
$385 less for cash etc.So there is a descent price difference down here.I have not seen any oktava but I'd like to hear more about them. Most shops where Ilive do not have a huge range to choose from.
I heard that there is a lot of korean/chinese mics' around but I'd much rather go for something with a name..And I know that rode are a reliable mic.
cheers -pete.

As I understand it from rode the only part from China is the diaphram. They now have their own assembly plant in Sydney where all the electronics/cases etc are made.(5000 mikes a month). I understand INXS have a heap of them which they use on guitar amps/kick!/o/heads etc. They take around 140spl!! so you can scream into them like a 58.
cheers
John :) Go aussie Go!

$

Anybody know where to get the best price on a nt3, i already have the nt1and i love it.

I'm Pretty Sure

John Sayers is correct. And from what I understand (from probably the second most reliable source on this), BOTH the capsules in the NT-1 and NT-2 are made by 797 Audio in Beijing, China. http://www.797audio.com I don't know where the caps in the other Rode mics are from.

RE, John was talking about the Rode's diaphragm, not the capsule. Or are they the same thing? Until now, I thought the diaphragm was the bit that vibrated, and the capsule was the entire assembly that holds the diaphragm. Yes? No?

dobro

Yes, indeedy, you are sure right about that!

And although John DID say "Rode diaphragms", I have a feeling he DID mean BOTH the diaphragms AND capsules with the diaphragms already attached to the capsules (hand or macjine tensioned); just like most people AND companies on their websites when talking about microphones. For example: http://www.adk.cc/capsule.html or http://www.pmiaudio.com/spt998.html

And although they are indeed different, I find people to use them interchangeably. Plus, that would mean John would be wrong about the only part made in China being the diaphragm since we know BOTH the capsules and diaphrams are made by 797 Audio in Beijing , China.

Do ANY microphone companies get capsules and diaphragms from different companies? I have no idea. I've never heard of it though.
