I'm new to this forum and couldn't find anything in the FAQ or past posts so I'm asking about the Rode M3. Has anyone used one? Does anyone have any comments on it? I'll be using it with a Boss Micro BR for recording things like acoustic guitar, mandolin, harmonica, maybe even mic'ing speaker cabinets, just general use.

Any reported experience is good.
Thanks.

The thing about those kinds of microphones that do not require phantom power is that they are typically less dynamic than condensers with phantom power. Overall, it is a pretty decent mic and Rode is a great company, however, I would look elsewhere. What kind of budget are you on? If the fact is that you do not want to buy a pre, than you might be better off buying a cheaper pre (If this is true I can list a few that are around $50-$70) and then buying a cheaper condenser. What are you going to be using the mic for?

I'm a bit confused now. I thought the M3 did have phantom power. It can either use phantom power or a 9v battery (and the mic detects the phantom power and overrides the battery), or at least that is what I read. And that's no guarantee of anything.

If you are going to be using it with phantom power rather than the 9V than the mic is actually pretty good. While i have used much better, if you are looking for good quality, low price, and a relatively easy use condenser than it is a good choice. I would try not to use the battery though. It takes away from the quality.
