you know, it's kind of funny... I love my Re-27 for VO.

It's a bit better at the job then the RE-20, IMO. I've also used the AU variant of the NT-1A (as opposed to the first run, which was chinese... which was a bit harsher in the upper registers).

Another nice mic I have in the collection is the NTG-2. I'm not a huge fan of shotguns, but this one sounds similar to a 419, but a little warmer. That said, my current favorites for VO is the Gefell 930 and the NTG. For my voice, they both give off a wonderful sound and really capture the character of my voice.

I figure this... if you're not sure, then try it in comparision to other mics. Go from there. Not every mic works on every voice. One of the best VAs in the country swears by his Royer 122 Phanom Powered Ribbon. I like it at well, but I don't get the results he does, so I stick with what works for me

I'm with ya on the Gefell. It's a great mic for VO. I would like to try a Peluso 2247 one of these days and see how it does on voice work. Another 'find' was an old EV 642 shotgun. I picked one up on eBay and it sounds very good.

The Peluso isn't bad, but there are alternatives that are far nicer IMO for just a little bit more. I don't know, I think it's that I had one or two go wonky on me in reads before, and the idea that this is a Chinese made copy (I know that the guys on Gearslutz swear by them though).

yeah, the um930 is a great alternative to the TLM103. Much smoother sounds come out of it compared to what I hear with the TLM103

But if you want to have a really versatile mic, try out the UMT70S. That is a beautiful sounding mic, has three patterns (which is more than enough for VO... you'll primaily use cardoid), and is extremely good with both instruments and voice.

I'm prepping to get the UMT800 and try that puppy out sometime in the next two months... I've heard that it's increadibly silky and smooth on vocals.

The kids got a Heil and he loves it. If I weren't so heavily saturated with dynamics I would definitely grab one. It would fool a lot of clients that "need" a condenser

...the "kid" would be glad to take one of your SM7s of your hands at a fair price, so you'd have the cash and the cabinet space for a spankin' new Heil PR-40 (like the one the "kid" loves!)...

it is the M930, not um930. Nitpicking, but Gefell always corrects me when I ask for them. (I live right near the factory here). I own a pair of m930s. they are amazing.

And that reason is?

The problem with some gear (like the RE20) is that the prices are fair in the US but not in Europe. Customs, laws etc. I suppose. In return, gear like AKG, Sennheiser, Beyer etc. are cheaper over here so those are the brands we euro dudes must focus on. The RE20 is a good mic (although I know of several mics that are just as good) and the price is OK in America but who's paying 1k dollars for one over here? Not many people. So we have our own "classic" mics.

yeah, if you can get it for $400 or so, then go for the RE-20, or 27 (which is about $50 more). Once you get into the 1K range, start looking at other mics. The R0de mics have made a comeback IMO since they started making them in AU, but for your application I would choose a different mic than the broadcaster out of that line (NT-2A would probably be your best choice as a starter).

The end answer is this... we don't know what your voice is like. Only you do. You need to go and audition some mics to find out what works best for you in your $ range

The reason the RE-20 has been such a mainstay in broadcast isn't so much due to it's sound ... but more due to the fact that it has about the most amazing off-axis response of any mic I can think of. And that kinda' thing is important when you consider that most announcers and/or guests will tend to be moving all over the place; it's very rare in most broadcast situations for one to have the opportunity to keep their mouth right on-axis with the mic at all times. It's just not practical.

That's not to say that it doesn't sound good, because it does. It lends a certain amount of size and weight / density to a voice that can work really well for an announcer or disk jock.

I use the RE20. It's an OK mic. It's not a go to mic for anything but it gets used. Part of the reason it gets used are those pointed to by Chessrock.

For dialog, I love the sE R-1 ribbon. It makes me sound like Orson Welles. It makes Orson Welles sound like God. It makes God sound like some super God that even more omnipotent than God.

The Blue Baby Bottle is a great dialog mic. It's got a hot, saturated sound that's the thing for a lot of dialog situations.

Sennheiser MD 441

Sinxce you seem to live in Europe, it would make sense to get a Sennheiser MD441 instead of the RE20. Its a notch better than the RE20 IMHO and you can find them rather cheap on European Ebay sites.

Those mics kick butt! And they sound good on anything and everything.
