rockabilly recording
I been listening to rockabilly music and the vocals have like panned or ADT slap back delay on one side to make it sound 50's how did they do this back then?

Mostly Slap back echo is around 100ms -170ms

But when i use a echoplex, DD3 or DD5 boss or delay pedals it really doesn't sound like those old slap back echos they used
in the 50's what can i do to make it more rockabilly 50's ?

The vocals sounds like when your far away and someone is talking over a broadcast like at Fair or out doors music fest were the sound doesn't reach u so u get a delay from the distance and it slapping against the walls, floor, buildings its a rockabilly recording tricks they do. Do u guys know what i mean and how to recreate these effects?

good question

I don't have an answer for you, I'm not even sure what you're talking about, 'cause I don't listen to Rockabilly...

If it's ADT, good luck, I've never been able to get that sound with standard digital effects (delay, flanger, etc) but there's probably some plug-in in some effects bundle somewhere for it.

If it's reverb, it's entirely possible that they're using natural acoustics.

a.) It could be the room.. if the studio is big and concrete enough, they might've just moved they mic farther away from the singer, or taken the vocal through a p.a. or something to get the sound.

b.) If it's from the 50s (or just like an effect from the 50s) it's probably an echo chamber, that technique was VERY prevelent from the 40s through the 60s.

If it's just reverb, software for "convolution" does an extremely good job at emulating it.

and yes, there is software for convolution, it's not a joke, it sounds like real chamber verb.. it's sometimes called a "room simulator" also.

What kinda sound was it again?

Isn't Rock-a-Billy where ya sit in a rocking chair and sing your billygoat to sleep?

OK, pay attention....3 vocal tracks, #1 panned dead center with no efx, #2 hard to one side with lots of reverb, #3 hard to the other side with the echo added. Mix down to a mono track and you get the "classic 50s rockabilly" sound. The balance of straight track and efx tracks is what gives you that classic sound.

Try frying your eggs sideways, it helps on low colesterol.
Just a 50 ms of echoplex, into a pan left for the traction controll on your stove`s panel.

Then Drink your milk Walters, never forget that.

and if it starts to feel warm add some colour, green is a good one I supose.

Cheers  ;)

I think walters is fletcher. :p

I love rockabilly!
Flat Duo Jets, Legendary Shack Shakers, Rev. Horton Heat....

But his question this time seems to be intelligible and valid. !

thanks guys for the help

What rockabilly bands do u guys like?

Is there any slap back echo effects, tricks, techiques that they used in the 50's to makes it more rockabilly like panning and mixing down to mono 3 tracks vocals but what about the guitars?

Dont egg him on dude.

Walters ,this forum can help you with your question.

People dont like answering you because you ask questions that defy logic in a language that noone but you understands. Do you read audio books like Mastering AUdio or The Handbook of Recording Engineering, or The Sound Reinforcement handbook?? So what do you do for a living?? Do you have to interact with people daily??? I am really curious. At first glance you seem like a troll that gets kicks out iof riling people up. I dont know really..

but all the other instruments would have different levels of slap, due to bleed.

What u mean by this ? how would the other instruments have different slap levels from the bleed?

IS the Echosonic Tape or Wire delay? to get that slap echo?

I heard at "Sun" recording they used "Channel echo"? i guess its like a ping pong from left to right and right to left to get a really short delay to make it slap echo but how did this work?

How would i channel echo?

walters!!!!!

I knew you couldn't stand to be away from me much longer!

Tell your mom it was great to see her last night! :)

When I want that real rockabilly sound, I get naked and shove the guitar neck up my ass then play kazoo while our singer rubs my balls.

Does that help?

walters, do you play Ping Pong? Sometimes they call it 'Table Tennis'

You guys are cruel, I knew there was a reason i like you.

The way they did it in the '50s used room delay as well as the tricks. I do live sound and gig tracking for a rockabilly band and we do what is simple and works - reverb and delay on vocals, and quite a bit less than you would think needed. Even with this stuff, less is more.

A lot of this comes from the singer's style - a really good rockabilly singer is going to be doing ec-ec-echoes right at the mic. For some good examples, check out some of the stuff by the Starline Rhythm Boys at www.starlinerhythmboys.com . (Not the band I work with, but one I'd sure like to be in...) :D

But once Bill Kirchen climbs on stage, all bets are off.
