rock mix.. criticize :please:?

My band was forced to record this in a hurry, and i had to mix it in a hurry, and it was a pain in the ass so this is my FINAL mix... i just want to know what sucks for next time. thanks a lot ahead of time

Okay, I had to listen to this at a VERY low volume because the wife and baby are asleep, but here's some observations...

The song itself is pretty cool, but there were timing problems during the tempo-changes.
I'm sure you can hear it... it's obvious.

The drums sound like mud.... the snare was too loud, the cymbals were too soft and the bass drum sounds like a mud-thud.

The bass guitar lost alot of it's definition during the fast-jam parts. You should've put more mid-punch on the bass and cut the lows (50 - 100 Hz range) just a bit. More reverb on the bass would be nice, too.

The second vocal is too loud.
Was it your intent to have it at the same level as the lead vocal?

It would've sounded better if it was sung in "harmony" rather than the exact same thing the lead vocal is doing, and mixed at a lower level... just enough to compliment the lead vocal and sweeten up the mix.
Also, you need a better vocal mic.

The guitars sound very POD-like.
The slide-lead part lacks bite and should've been louder in the mix during the solo.
I didn't like the "cat screeching" sound when the bass stopped playing... it's annoying and unneccessary.

The overall mix itself seems over-compressed.

Other than that... I LIKED IT!!! ;)

Just my humble opinion... YMMV. :D

how do i keep my drums from sounding so muddy....? i agree on the bass, i used an antares mic modeler on it and it's not very tonal. for vocals i used an NT1, what do you suggest is better? andd i mic'd the guitar cabinets soooo i don't know what i can do about that..) :

I liked the song but Buck is right....it's way muddy. I'd like to know more about how it was recorded before suggesting things to try differently.......ooooh, the change in feel just came up....I like that, the echo guitar sounds cool.....still muddy though. Ok back to the topic......
The guitar does have that overprocessed POD sound....too compressed. The drums need a little bit added to the EQ around 3k and also up around 8-10k. I think that would give them a little more life. Really the same over most of the mix. Possibly a lot of this could be improved by micing things differently. A good start man.....;)
 
it sounds like it was recorded on a cassette multitracker...

interesting gtr parts now and then.
 
Pretty cool song. Cool lead guitar parts. I liked the crunch of the rhythm guitar.

Buck and Lt. Bob gave very good reviews, so there's no need to repeat that.

One additional thought I had... I thought the vocals are getting lost behind the guitars. You might try to EQ the guitars out of the way. Ironic that the one line I could make out was, "Try and speak up please." :D

I heard a little amp pop at 4:17.
 
GOOD ADVICE UP TOP!!!

so i'll stick to my normal caterwhalering... and say, i liked the tune man!!! i could have gone with out that cat screech though:D but the switch after that was tight!!!

it was recorded on an Akai DPS16...why does it sound like tape?? hmmm...i 'mastered' it on t-racks, maybe that's why.

what kind of mic positioning would help?

i treid the EQ and it sounds more crisp
