Martin Lawrence reference ...... no ?

the distored bass in the tic toc cowbell clock intermission could use a little less gain? Or something its quite thick and soupy. I can't really hear any note seperation. Thats the only thing i really thought needs some help.

Aside from that great fucking job. As usual.

the bad news is that I listened to it again and my wife liked it...its a kiss of death, she's a big green day fan too...sell you're kit G, take up professional golf and shirt lifting classes :D

Greg this is awesome!:) I love it!:)

I hate you!:mad::mad:

Not really, if I could get half that sound I'd be a happy guy.:confused:

Awesome work!!

Sweet

Nice work Greg. I like the cliché references throughout, even a bit of Yes in there.

The cymbals sound a little phase challenged. The whole bottom end might be a bit muddy from around 500HZ and down. I had to cut those bands to hear the vocals.

The toms sound very good, the best part of the kit I think. I like the click on the kick but when you hit the kick and the cymbals together some of the kick gets masked.

Another thing is the mix seems really thick and everything is spread real wide.
I don’t know maybe some narrowing of the instrument placement might clear it up.
Like the guitar at the intro. It sounds like it’s been doubled and is even on both sides.

Same with the piano.
Piano in a Greg song?
What’s up with that? Yeah “the killer” played piano so I guess it’s okay.

I think the bass and drums fill the stage very well and the guitars, panned and narrowed would be icing on the cake.
Then at 00:54 the guitar zipper is only on the right when I’d expect that to pan across the stage like a sword slashing my face.

Keep on rocking youngster. I like this a lot. I think you’d be a hit at Sturgis.

Hehe... Good stuff Greg. Someday I'll get my drums to sound as clean as yours. I'm gonna find that cracking snare, someday.... soon.

Now, dare I pose a critique? I'm only on headphones now, so I'll need to listen to this when I get home, however I listened to your other stuff on phones, too, and didn't have any complaints so...

I can't hear your kick. I did a triple-take, just to make sure, but as far as the smack in the face 500-15KHZ click - it was quite low throughout, and in spots, I couldn't hear it at all. The drums also sounded a bit too clean, perhaps. You've got your drums sounding so good, it's almost like there's no roominess, no "boom", no mic bleed. For the punk parts of the song this is the sweet-spot, and definitely your signature... However, for the non-punk parts, the drums were a bit mechanical, even a bit sterile. (I can't believe I'm actually saying this crap to you, but hey... I've gotta be true to my ears). I only wish I had this problem with my recordings.

At around the 3:00 mark, I grinned from ear to ear as the punk kicked in. Man alive - you should be making thousands with that sound. If you're not already (and I'm only assuming this because this is a "homerecording" forum), you should go pro with your mixing abilities. I mean, as soon as the punk sound kicked in, it was as pro as anything I've ever heard.

at 4:30, love the panning of the echo on the cowbells. And then that grungy - terror inducing, menacing guitar comes in and I couldn't wait to hear what was comin' around the corner. Then it comes.... LOL I loved it.

6:00 was awesome... Great soloing... The punk shows up again, and here we go!

Yeah.... Your toms sound friggin' amazing.

Okay... I'm babbling on now, so I'll shut up.

Fabulous tune, bro, and holy cow, for an eight minute song, it as far away from boring as being in a top-fuel dragster.

Definite thumbs up.

Thanks dude. It is meant to be tongue-in-cheek, but I really do love the power of rock and roll! :D

Thanks man. I agree that bass part is too fat and nasty, but fuck it. It's only rock and roll. :D

Your wife liked it? She has good taste! Why the fuck did she marry you? ;)

Thanks for the critiques. The mix is intentionally wide and dense. I tried to dance on the edge between a fat/muddy. It's a lot of everything. 4 rhythm tracks, a stereo bass track, 5 lead tracks, 15 vocal tracks, etc. All of this while trying desperately to give everything it's own little niche. My cymbals are how they are. They're very big and loud. I play live a lot. I don't have "recording" cymbals so I make do in my small room and loud cymbals. :o

Thanks dude. Fire away with the critiques. That's what it's here for. I think you might need to listen on something other than cans. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I think the kick is pretty prominent on every system I've listened on. Having said that, I did mix these drums considerably differently than I usually do, so I could be way out in left field. I went for a more natural feel on the whole kit.

3 or 4 chords is all you need

Excellent song Greg the outro is really cool. Thanks for posting on soundclick

Wow, Greg L!

All is where should be - Bass and BD, for example, are perfect for my taste:)

Nice work, performance and top quality mixing.

Ciro

Dude!!!!! This has got to be my favorite song you've done. Theirs lots of styles in this song to make just about everyone happy. Mega points for you my friend!!!

I'm totally behind the general message of the song, however I think I would have liked to hear a bit more substance/variation to the lyrics. But I know your philosophy on lyrics so I guess you're achieving what you're after.

Other than that, incredible performance and production. Loved the raunchy bass stuff. Kick drum sounds great, not sure why anybody would say they can't hear it.

Matt

Excellent, excellent sound. The redundant piano triplet part is genius.

Some things to try to see how they sound:

* Ditch the "C'mon" (1.02)

* I can't make out the bass very well. Cuz it's distorted? I think it's getting swamped by the guitars, which overpower the whole mix a bit. Turn 'em down just a taste? Nah. Maybe. Turn the vocal up a bit, and do something about the bass.

* Add some more piano to the outro - it's a bit repetitive. Piano would make it exciting, which is the effect it had earlier in the tune.

I've decided you know what you're doing with drums. These sound great - the tom hits are right there.

What's your signal chain for that lone guitar that comes in after the 1960's psychedelic segment?

You didn't need to double up the tempo so fast at 6.18. That solo guitar that came in at 6.03 was really satisfying. You're like Zappa with the changeups in this.

I give better feedback than you. I rock.

Thanks for the feedback.

"C'mon" is staying.

I've had no problems with the bass gtr on any of the systems I've listened through and have gotten positive feedback about it from the other site. Lets see if anyone else chimes in about the bass. I'm somewhat open to fiddle with it. It's just bass.

I agree about the outro being a little bland. I had every intention of filling it up with sound, but never got to it because I'm sick of this song. This was written with the idea of closing out my next album. By the time I get around to all that, I'll add more to this ending.

Thanks about the drums.

All of the guitars are done through Guitar Rig. I'm a drummer, mainly. I don't have 100w tube amps laying around. I used various Marshalls and 4x10 cabs. I think that AC/DC-ish riff after the distorted bass part was a Plexi through a 1960 cab. One speaker mic'd dead center, one speaker mic'd off-axis, both signals sent out wide to each side.

Thanks again. :)

Man I thaught Ace Frehley was singing when it started. Mix wise its good, I can hear everything just fine. But, it reminded me too much of that long ass Green Day tune on American Idiot (Jesus of what ?) :) . When I saw the size of the mp3 I said "Damn, Gregs doin a Punk Opera". Anyway, not my cup of tea, but its mixed well. And thats what your after.

I've had another thought. (I know, I know...) You know Sloop on the other board? He takes people's mixes and tinkers with them and posts the results, just for the joy of it. Maybe two out of three times, he does something with a mix that nudges it in an interesting direction. If he got his hands on this one, my guess is that it would wind up with a slightly lighter bottom or lighter low mids and possibly a bit more air up top. He does more than just smiley-face EQ stuff (in this case, one corner of the mouth would go down), but that's often a direction things take. I'm not suggesting you ask him to unleash his voodoo on this one, but having heard what he usually does to mixes, I think that's what would happen on this one. Something to think about. Fifteen, twenty seconds, tops. If it doesn't ring a bell, let it be a bell unrung situation.

Damn Greg, you've got a rock opera for the new millenium happening there-the Who would be proud! Pete Townsend has nothin' on you Dude..........:D
