How do they get that "robotic" type effect on a vocal or voice track?

Example 1: System of a Down - Old School Hollywood: At the intro to the song where he sings "Old School........Hollywood........Baseball...."

It's like the famous Cher Vocals question, I guarantee you post a question about that, and you'll get a million different answers.


I think the best thing is to know the basic tools that are close to doing what you want, and then tweaking (using your imagination) from there. It might even turn out that it wasn't any of those things at all.

A vocoder, waves morphoder and a talk box are a good place to start. Or maybe even a sampler with the ability to modulate notes.

That way you might be able to record phrases into it, then set different modulation parameters to get weird effects going. Cubase's "Halion" might do that, I'm not sure.
