Robo Voice effect

Hi. I been working with a VoCoder but Im almost convenced this is not was is used to create the robo voice like sound. To reference some songs that have this sound is Cher - Do You Believe In Love and that Blue Daba De song,, I can not think of any others right now, but anyways, is it the vocoder used to create this? I been tweeking mine like crazy and I can not pull that off. I hope this is the right section to post under, then again maybe another one.

If you have a vocoder with a lot of bands (more than 32), you can apparently approach that type of sound. You'll have to read up more on vocoders to really grasp the whole "band" concept if you don't already.

This may serve that end: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jul00/articles/synthsec.htm

I think the Cher song, though, uses Anatres Autotune (or something similar) "set to 11", if you take my meaning (if you don't, rent "Spinal Tap" - you'll thank me later).

Yeah, that effect was probably done with autotune. if you do a manual tune and then use the piano control to choose what notes, you'll be able to achieve the effect. Do you have a vocoder that can be controlled via a midi controller? That might be part of it too. They are definitely making that pitch in both songs hit certain notes, it's not the vocalist doing it either.

So check that out, and if you have the cash, auto-tune is almost a necessary plugin for studios anyway (or shell out the cash for the hardware one :p ) and it'll take care of it.

The only vocoder I have reach of is in FL Studio and It goes up to if not past 32bands and of couse is does for sure have 32 band options, you can use ANYTHING as the carier in it, even a recorded sound. Its just the Robo voice thing is not coming out for me, more then likely I do not know how to do it LOL :p

From what I've read, you need more like 128+ bands to pull this type of thing off.

With FL you can use the "speech synthesizer" then modify that sound in a wav editing program................just an idea.

32 band is OK (Obviously the more bands you have the more natural the effect will be). If you are using the vocoder effect as an insert (Thus effecting the whole vocal part), try moving the vocoder to a send instead and dial in the vocoder using your vocal tracks send level. I have found that vocoders (Like Reverbs), are best used sparingly along side the original track. By allowing the original track to play you'll help avoid the ROBOT (Unless that is the effect you are after).

seriously, if you just want the Cher/Eiffel 65 sound, that is straightup Antares Autotune. it's great for those effects, plus it actually corrects shitty singing somewhat if you know how to use it. for the "robot" effect, you don't even need to control what notes via MIDI, just set the "retune" time to as fast as it will go, so that when it corrects pitch it jumps instantly from one note to another with no glide time. that is the effect you are describing. vocoders can do it, but you're going to be replacing the singer's voice with another carrier, so it won't sound the same.

click HERE for an example of how i've gotten it to work. or click here and check out the song "Robot Porno."

matt_macfarlane I like the Im Sorry effect, lol thats what ill call it for this time, but can you send me the Auto tune Preset for that though email?. I have it for CoolEdit Pro2.0 BTW Thats good work on that tune. Thanks

I can get down with vocoded vocals if its used like Mogwai does as just another instrument, but thats about it.

That vocal effect has been played into the ground. It needs to stop now.
Amen to that! Can't stand that sound! One of the reasons that I'll not listen to Eifel 65... what was that song? Blue yabba dabba doo? Ugh

hey ppl, im soooo tryna get my hands on to the vocal effect, but i was wonderin wat virtual software could do that fing, can antares auto tune really really do that???

Your answer lies that a way. Read the posts, homeboy posted samples of autotune and that is it

If you use Logic

If you use Logic Pro you can get the same sound using the vocal correction effect... I've used it rather successfully on a few songs and it doesn't cost as much...

is the intro (main tune) a voice effect in "intergalactic" by the Beastie Boys??
It sounds like it could be, not sure?? If it is how would you pull that off?
