I recently picked up an old Robert's 991 tube reel to reel. This is very similar to the Akai M8. It has two all tube channels which I have since pulled. They sound very cool as a guitar amp, but am also interested in using them as a tube mic pre. Have done a little experimenting but can only get enough level if I go out of of the speaker out but the mic signal barely moves the VU meter needle. I know people do pretty expensive mods to these, but as of yet I do not have the funds or electronics know how to do much modification. Wondered if anyone had any experience or tips on using these as mic pre's with little or no modification.

Have you tried a dynamic mic?... I doubt that pre provides phantom power. You can purchase devices that do just that provide just the voltage.

Yeah I tried with a dynamic. I definitely got audio through it, just didn't move the VU meter at all so I am not sure if I am really getting any of the tube color or just basically running my mic through it, so to speak?
