RNP--> RNC connectivity.....

What is generally the prefered method of connecting an RNP to an RNC? RNP out to the RNC or using the inserts? The signal will go directly from here to my soundcard which has unbalanced inputs, so keeping the signal balanced does not come into play.

Is there an advantage to doing it one way or the other, as far as gain structuring, responsiveness, or noise?

Since you are not using balanced connectors to your sound card it wont make any difference.
I have done it both ways and don't notice any difference in sound or output.

as far as your monitoring is concerned, it shouldnt make any diff. If your mixer is just a mixer, then on paper it's exactly the same.

If you're talking about a fw interface, or a mixer that also is your fw interface, then it CAN make a difference. The fw typically taps the signal after the pre, but before the insert. So rnp->rnc->mixer you be sending a compressed signal to your DAW, whereas running the rnc as an insert would be sending the DAW a dry signal, but monitoring wet, which is preferable imo. On most (or at least a lot of) hardware, you can specify if you want a pre or post fader signal sent to the firewire.

The RNC was designed to connect to the RNP (or any other pre or mixer "Insert") in a most simple and elegant way - a single TRS cable for each channel from the "Insert" on the pre to the "In" on the RNC.

It will work fine running the RNC inline as well - your choice.
