how truly good are these units? Never heard the work of one (not to my knowledge), but always hear volumes in praise about them.

IMO, the FMR Audio RNC1773 looks like a cheap plastic toy, but it's not. It's made of metal and it's built like a little tank. Harvey Gerst even drove his truck over one to prove how strong and well built the RNC really is. I've also used the RNC near many transmitters, and the RNC has excellent RFI shielding. The RNC1773 is a true workhorse and it really is a -- really nice compressor.

I would say in 'Super Nice' mode it sounds not disimilar to an Aphex Compellor. Even with 10 to 12 db of gain reduction it stays pretty transparent.

It normal mode it's fairly conventional.

'Super Nice' mode is what really makes the RNC. ;)

Yeah, you don't hear the work of the RNC, you only hear when it's not there. It really is a worthy cheap compressor.-Richie

i have gain reduction of about 20 db on super nice mode and can't really hear the compression u just hear some high end being eaten up for obvious reason...but it does add a tone to the sound that the sound wouldn't have if the RNC wasn't patched in

how much...

you think these should go for? What is a reasonable price so I won't get shafted...
