hi again !

can i get your opinion on what settings (on my RNC) are best for voice ? i know it's about trial & error but what did you find works best for your vocal ? i'm looking to get the most natural and dynamic sound. thanks alot !

The honest answer is - it depends........ There really is no way to give any specific settings, it's totally dependent on the track you feed to it.

Hi Bruce,

Ok then ... How do I use the RNC as a "Limiter" rather than a compressor ? I mean, I'm mostly interested in preventing distortion when my voice gets too loud in parts of a song. (I've ruined perfectly good songs like this :( ). Thanks again.

OK, for limiting - set the Ratio control fully to the right (100:1), turn on SuperNice. Attack/Release in the center. Gain at 0. Start with threshold at 0, then feed your signal thru. If you're seeing gain reduction, INCREASE the threshold until the gain reduction occurs only on the peaks you want to limit. If you only want it to drop on extreme peaks then you'll be setting the threshold fairly high (so the signal is almost never touched by compression unless you really feed a hard peak into it.)

Also, while the RNC sounds great and all, plus it's really tempting to use a new piece of gear on everything, you really should only use it when it's needed. Unless you're in a live situation where you can't afford a peak blowing the meters, you should be able to safely set your levels so that peaks get safely contained without patching in a compressor.

It'd be much better to compress on mix-down only as needed, as opposed to compressing going to tape (or HD, whatever!).
On the other hand, if you're going to analog, some compression going to tape is probably useful to reduce the noise floor and increase s/n ratio.

On the other, other hand, there are no rules... go with what sounds good! See what I mean by my first answer - "it depends!!!"?????????? ;)

Good luck and have fun with it!

Oh yeah.... forgot to tell ya, set the Attack all the way to the left (fast setting) so that it clamps down on the signal very quickly (for limiting purposes).

Ok thanks Bruce :)
