OK, before I forget, the song is called Riot (for now) and can be found at www.ampcast.com/jags !

Once again my production skills are getting better almost completely thanks to this site and I think this is probably my best first mix yet but I've reached the limit of my knowledge in terms of how it sounds.

It's pretty slow and centered around a repetitive rif/chord sequence in an almost trip hop way. It actually reminds me of Air more than anything else if only due to it's laid backness.

Jim Deacon electro acoustic provides the rhythm and bass again, and the elelctric riffs etc were all done through a zoom effects pedal and straight into the mic in of the soundcard. String effect done by putting my single sheap chit (;)) mic on the speaker of an old casio keyboard. And the vocals have been treated with echo reverb, nothing else. If you listen through headphones you will hear crackling and a very quiet high pitched noise through the first line of the vocals which I put down to the pissy pre-amp at the mic in of the soundcard (thanks to a query here in the mic board). Thankfully it's not as noticeable for the rest of the vocals because of the increased backing. Unfortunately all of my songs have been tainted with a hiss (mic'ed tracks at least) which would be completely unbearable were it not for the instrumental backing masking it to some extent. You may hear the occasional 'ping' created by recording myself tapping a crystal glass with a knife and adding some reverb to make the ring more noticeable, nice change to a triangle :).

That's about it. Hope you enjoy. If you listen could you tell me if you can make out the lyrics... my brother says he can't but I can't tell cos I wrote and sang them.. not that it's too much of a problem in any case, is it?

Thanks

Jags

PS I've jammed these chords for over 20 minutes before with my ex band, thankfully this version clocks in at under 4 minutes, my shortest effort yet! :)

Yeah, definitely trippy. I liked the tune. The bass was pretty cool. It might be my ears or this lo fi feed but, the guitar on the intro sounds slightly out of tune. I could be wrong though. THe song itself is cool and built up nicely

Thanks Ray J, I was beginning to think the song was perfect! ;) It's possibly the obscure open chords that I used which make the acoustic sound out of tune, all part of the effect (I hope :)). I tuned the guitar right before the track was laid down. I'm glad you think the bass is cool, it was a completely improvised 'first take' and I wasn't sure if it would be ok. I don't know if you noticed the once or twice when I played the wrong note for the occasion and just managed to save it with the follow up :).

Cheers again.

Really laid back tune, and I enjoyed listening. Very good voice I thought, some of the words I couldn't make out but again good vox. Bass sounded a little like P/F bass player some what I thought, sounded good. Guitar didn't sound out of tune as much as not in sync with the other insturments, but like everything else just an opinion. I enjoyed it, good stuff!

Thanks, I think I'll rerecord the acoustic tracks because I think you're right, they do go out of time a bit, mostly because I couldn't hear the click track properly when I was doing them I guess. Nice to be compared to pink floyd :) (I trust that's what you meant!)

Glad you enjoyed it :)

Intersting sounding tune... very creative.. I thought the guitar sounded a little thin, like it was an Elcto-Acoustic plugged in(and as I look at the post I see it is). If your technology allows it, you might want to try Recording it on 2 tracks, one track with the on-board pickup and the other using the mic... good mix other wise, nothing really glaring out to me(like Im some kind of pro, just listen to my crap..lol)...

Bassman

Thanks Bassman, I don't think the method of recording you mentioned is possible through my soundcard, might be wrong though, it has a line in and mic input so I don't know if they can both be used at the same time. In the meantime I've tried adding a hefty amount of reverb to the guitars to make em sound thicker! It seems to have worked ok but I think rerecording them is still in order to make up for my slackness in the orginal recording! :) I'm glad you think the mix is ok, shows I am getting better, not be long before I'm a millionaire producer ;).
