Right someone clear up midi and recording for me....

OK so when i come to make a track i normally open a sequencer (cool edit) ..RECORD the sound/melody i want ...then save it.

But it's recording that sound through the output cables into my soundcard in's

....So what exactly is the midi cable doing?? I have the midi cable hooked up ....is it just so i can trigger sounds on my computer by it.

Or can i actually record the sound through the midi, getting a better quality?

All MIDI is is a set of instructions for the module, your soundcard, you keyboard, or whatever to read. MIDI is just data, not sound.
