riding faders

Usually a term used when tracking live or overdubbing, it means that you actually move the faders to keep the level from going to out of control. So when bouncing down, if there is a really loud bass drum thump on one part, one could essentially "ride that fader" on that part and keep the level consistent.
 
Or it could be a rodeo term for riding an old bull eh? :)

Get good at it. Riding faders is a essential mixing skill.

Oh, you may be thinking "Well why couldn't I just throw a compressor on the track, or using some dsp on my computer to level it out".

In either case, you lose quality. Compresssion through some analog distortion, and dsp through a dithered signal.

Analog fader movement is still the most natural, less quality destructive way to even out a track.

i remember one studio i went to and was really happy with the results was because i knew the enginner meant business. it was a demo for my band, it took 4 nights including mixing. but by the end of the first night he basically knew what he wanted, and he was great. he knew where to turn things down nd up in the song to make it sound better. he was a really talented guy... i think his most known work has gotta be destiny's child. funny how you go from no name high school punk bands to things like that.
