After hearing this and that about him for a couple of years, I finally really heard Richard Bona this year on Mike Stern's Voices recording. On the strength of that I bought Bona's latest solo recording, Reverence. Wow! Not only can he play the shit out of a bass, he plays guitar and percussion, he has a beautiful voice and writes really good stuff, and projects an image of a really sweet, nice guy.
If Zawinul and Shorter ever do decide to take another swing at Weather Report, Bona should be first choice for a bassist (in fact he was a member of the Zawinul Syndicate for a while and appears sparingly on 1992's My People and 1998's World Tour 2-CD live set, and is listed as a guest on the upcoming Faces & Places CD -- along with Jeff Beck!)
