Hi guys - I use some old Beyer Dynamic M500 N (C) ribbon mics I bought 30 yrs ago. It's all I've ever used so I have nothing to compare to... I just use them for vocals & they sound natural to me so that's all I ask. But they sure don't have much level. I need the trim cranked up almost full on my Mackie mixer. Anyone know anything about these or ribbon mics in general? Such as how far away to place them...Thanks.

Well, you just posted a pretty good description of a ribbon mic. I put mine as far away as I can, given the amount of gain I have. They do have a nice proximity effect, but that's not always what I'm looking for. So 12" ends up the usual distance.
